As a teacher, I am for it... on occasion and for some kids.
In our elementary school we have it once a month for grades 4-6. We have about 8-10 kids ( maximum of 15 kids) come out of a total population of almost 500 kids, so it is really only for a small percentage of kids. Sometimes the kids have been absent and just need a quiet time and place with occasional help to get caught up, take make up tests etc. If a student has less than 40% average they may be "drafted" to attend by parents or teacher. About a third of the kids come just because they want to raise their grades by redoing an assignment or having extra time on computer. In our school we focus on school work only, not washing windows or doing manual labor. The kids can bring a lunch, have hot chocolate, popcorn etc. as long as they are working. Some kids stay for an hour, some for six hours. We have a break for about 5 minutes each hour. Frankly, I wish our other five days were as much fun and as productive. I have been having Saturday schools at least once a quarter for about 30 years. We find it useful and enjoyable. Other schools may use it as a punishment. We see it as one more way to give a kid a break and extra help. About 70% of the kids who attend our Saturday schools volunteer to come. We are also a low income area, maybe they come because school is warmer, safer, and has better food. It is certainly more relaxed than regular school days. Hope this helps.

I am for it!!! Here is how Saturday school worked at my HS (4 years ago). You were only allowed to have 10 absences or you would fail a class. You could go to Saturday school from 8-12 and every thirty minutes would take one off. For some one that skipped a lot of class I loved it! You just had to sit in the cafeteria and do homework or read. You could not talk or sleep.

Saturday school where I live is given for punishment. I personally am against it because ultimately it is the parent that have to get up early and take the little buggars to class and then wait half the day until they are out and then have to go pick them up. And, I don't think kids get much out of it. I guess, for a kid, if your folks got mad about spending their Saturday having to take and pick up they could make your life miserable, and you might straighten up.

It doesn't bother me too much. My school splits the day between Wednesday (5 periods) and Saturdays (3 periods). Of course, this is for a boarding school. I don't know about punishments or regular day schools.

I am against it because why would you want to go back to school on a Saturday when you could be hanging around with your friends, maybe have a job that you have to be at, or a special event that is going to take place or have family plans.

I personally am against it because generally the kids who get it don't like school anyway and half the time won't show up . . . and then the next step would be suspension, which is what they want anyway . . a free day to sit home and do nothing . . . I think something else should be done . . .

Do you mean for everyone or just for a punishment? I think it is a fitting punishment but should ONLY be given as a punishment because kids need time to have social lives and study and do things other than school.

Against. If they don't learn it in the 5 days during the week their at school, they sure as heck won't learn it during that extra day. Besides, people need a break. (And not necessarily from work. The socially outcast see the weekends as their refuge.)

Saturday school is not that bad. When i had it it was raining so they had us walking around the school washing windows and then they gave us soda and doughnuts.

If i get in trouble again i hope i get saturday school again

yes, if it means xtra days, i think school could be cut down to 4 days and Friday be the days xtra school events could be held so weekends are free from this kind of activity. and a cap should be put on homework so students don't burn out, and I've been out of school a long while now to be saying this.
