Sunday is the most common day for Christian worship. This means Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants. Of course Seventh Day Adventists and a few others believe in Saturday as the day of primary public worship. Catholic churches actually have mass every day. But Sunday is the primary day because Christians believe that Jesus rose from the dead on Sunday. Saturday night is also common because its the vigil for Sunday....Judaism, from which Christianity came, starts the day at sundown before. So Saturday night is a way for people to observe Sunday if they are not able to actually show up on Sunday (i.e. work), or in addition to Sunday proper.

The Apostles made Sunday the Christian day of worship because it is the day of Our Lord and Savior's glorious Resurrection. Even though they were Jewish and had been raised celebrating the Saturday Sabbath, they believed that celebrating Mass on the day of the Resurrection was more appropriate than celebrating on the day when Christ lay dead in the tomb. The Catholic Church, the Church of the Apostles, has continued the practice for 2,000 years. Only fairly recently has Saturday evening been allowed as an alternative to Sunday. This was done to accomodate the many people who have to work on Sunday or are otherwise unable to attend Holy Mass on Sunday.

Certain prayers and Scripture readings are assigned for Mass on each day of the week, and the Saturday evening Mass is not the Saturday Mass. The prayers are not those which you would hear if you attended Mass on Saturday morning. They are the prayers of the Sunday Mass, the same prayers and Scripture readings you would hear at Mass the following morning, on Sunday.

Yes sun down on Saturday is counted as Sunday. Usually they figure 4:00 P.M. is sundown just in case your wondering. This is why Jesus was killed at about 3:00 on Friday which is the first day and after 4:00 on Friday started Saturday which was the second day and after 4:00 on Saturday it was Sunday which was the third day he rose. For some people the three days in the tomb is confusing and this is why.

The Jewish Sabbath (the Biblical seventh day of the week, Saturday) is from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday.

The Lord's Day in most Christian Churches is the first day of the week, the day that Jesus rose from the dead, Sunday.

Correspondingly, the Lord's Day is from sundown on Saturday to sundown on Sunday.

This is reflected best in the most important Mass of the Church Year, the Easter Vigil Mass, which starts at sundown on Holy Saturday.

With love in Christ.
