In a way, it made for a pretty good running gag, and part of its use probably came about when the writers couldn't think of any other plot ideas.
However, the producers made a good point when they talked about their decision to finally reveal Snuffy to the adults: keeping the gag running would have sent kids the wrong message. They would have eventually come to the erroneous conclusion, as Big Bird might have, that it's better to keep to yourself something you believe than to keep telling others even when they've already told you they don't believe you.
I remember that "revealing Snuffy" episode, and I agree with the director on the shot that pans across the adults as they encounter Snuffy for the first time--he had Bob as the last character the camera ended on. I believe that of all the adult characters, Bob disbelieved Big Bird the most, and that as a result, he *should* be the last one in the pan.

Yes - I was shocked to realize my youngest son didn't know Snunnfleupagus was imaginary - tho our "Muppets at the Met: Please Don't Eat the Paintings clearly showed this to be the case....

personally, I think Big bird is on drugs! to imagine anything that big and ugly.. yeah.. drugs.
