I asked my brother and the bottom line is he says he doesn't believe that second hand smoke is harmful. Or all that harmful..
He says that there are pollutants and dangers anywhere and that something is going to kill us all eventually, and he doesn't feel that his smoking is a big contributing factor.
He also says that he genuinely hadn't thought about it, he just does what he wants and feels he should have the freedom to do it (doesn't make sense I know)
I'm going to say most of them are in denial, ignorant bliss or are acting self-righteous.
PS- You can tell that the some, like the poster above me maybe? Is either stupid or an asshole and that's why they do/did it. Although I definitely admit there are considerate ones, and i'm on my way to give you guys thumbs up!!
PPS- Some smokers bring up this point, (some have done it here actually)
They mention car pollution and sprays etc. Well there is a difference. They are necessary and not usually a choice. It's not like someone backs their car into a restaurant and pumps the fumes in. Our food is delivered in vans, our mail on airplanes etc. That kind of pollution has a real benefit to it aswell.
As for hygiene etc. It's not usually a choice whether a person has had a hard day and smells of B.O or chooses to use a body spray/perfume. Those sprays are not harming anyone, are usually done in private and almost everyone has to use them.
Also if it happened a lot people would be quick in complaining about it and making laws telling people to bathe etc (lol)
As far as I know it's actually not permitted to spray air fresheners unless the room is well ventillated and even then it is not commonly done around people, for allergy reasons etc. Or if it is you can get it stopped.
I wish people would just answer the question, can you JUSTIFY it. Yes or no, how? It has nothing to do with car fumes. That does not justify it because it's not comparable.

i think that the government is focusing on the harm of second hand smoke only because they don't want people to think about other chemicals that affect people...people are constantly exposed to a lot of stuff that is more dangerous. however, nobody tends to pay too much attention to this. just like people here have already said, think about TV, computer, stuff u use in the bathroom (and i mean everything, even soap and toothpaste -causes neurotic brain damage, deodorants)...sprays..etc. how about those airfreshners that they constantly promoting these days? how come noone is worried about chemicals in them? or how about the ones that kill almost all bacteria? why is it good to kill bacteria and inhale all those toxins instead? you know i have read the book about this and believe me, second hand smoke has the least effect on us. there is not justification for smoking in front of people that don't though. especially children. not only because it can harm their health but also because they pick up the message that it's ok. that can harm them for the rest of their lives. as for adults, i always ask if it's ok if i smoke before i light up a sigarrette.

I don't really try to justify it, I just try to make sure that I isolate myself when I am smoking- or only smoke around other smokers.
lots of smokers don't care, but I do and go out of my way not to be observed by little kids, or smoke near others.

Last I checked no one was killing me with their smoke! If I see people smoking I know not to go up to them and start chit chatting. Most places are smoke free so I don't breath smoke there.
I think people's car exhaust, hair spray, body spray, body odor, and stupidity is more likely to harm me!
The person below me is so right about the smell. There's a lot more offensive odors than that but people are too stupid to realize that! I'd rather smell smoke than smell some kid's dirty diaper.
Yeah I too see that some loser giving me a thumbs down and I'm not even a smoker! Don't like my opinion? GET OVER IT AND GET A LIFE!!!! You see a burning building, would you run into it? YEAH SO DON'T WALK INTO A CLOUD OF CIGARETTE SMOKE!

Well I started smoking at an early age, That was about 30 years ago. There was no talk of cancer or it being addictive. So now I'm addicted. The states got Millions of dollars. I got nothing. The states spend the money on trying to stop young people from smoking, Not helping us old mfer's to stop. So, Take a deep breath. You may be getting some of my second hand smoke till I die.
And the non smoker who gave me a thumbs down can KMA and I hope you die from my second hand smoke. :)

because the there is no proof that 2nd hand smoke is harmful. the only actual case study was a woman who lived with a chain smoking husband for 20 years.
what's really pi$$ing me off is that people react angrily if they even smell smoke. i know a lot of people that smell worse than my cigarette. do i jump on them and tell them to put out their body? no.
