Cell phones in general seem to spark rude behavior more than anything else I encounter.
General etiquette already covers the use of cell phones, but most people just ignore it.
I agree -- you are under no obligation to stay at the beck and call of a customer who, if you will, is at the beck and call of his cell phone. If his shopping needs were his first priority, he wouldn't answer his phone, plain and simple.
Keep up the rebellion! :D

Yes, there should be ettiquette but just like everything else in the world, manners went out the window. EVEN the LAW of not driving while holding a phone is ignored.
Just keep doing what you do and walk away. No one will be able to blame you. You are not the one that did anything wrong.
Oh, and I was finding myself falling into that habit also, which is too easy. I MAKE myself not answer it.. I just glance at it.. and call the person back when I am finally free. Same goes for when I'm driving.

I think you have done the right thing. If your time is valuable and are making the effort to help someone, even as part of your job, who then decides to take a call (rather than brush it off with a "Can I call you back?"), your life should not be part of the deal put on hold.
We sometimes need to be flexible - especially if the person has apologized (in other words, they know what the right thing to do is) or the call was very brief, otherwise you might have seven or eight half-started jobs on the go, which makes your life harder too.

Well, in terms of laws no, in terms of people being smart and polite, no, it doesn't seem like the general public is up for that.
I personally don't have a cell phone. But, I do think people are annoying with them.

These people are already rude. Etiquette is a foreign concept to them. Your idea is good, but impossible to implement in a world full of jackasses.

I agree with you, it's very rude. I find it especially aggravating at restaurants or something when the person is trying to take someone's order.
