This not going to make you very excited.
Dogs' smell is a mixture of dried up urine, poop, and the bacteria which feed on these. As you know, a wet dog smells horrible. This is because all the "dried up stuff" come alive, when they are wet.
The best way to keep the odor away is to give the dog frequent baths; once a month or once a year is not enough.

geosmin is very very small and can be carried on the wind and in the air. It maintains a dirty, musty smell and can settle into your clothing, hair, and even skin when you are exposed to it. Some regions have higher geosmin content than others and some people are not as sensitive to it’s smell. Hence the reason not everyone on Google or Yahoo! Answers knew what the question was about. You go outside (especially on a windy day) and you come in smelling like “outside”. It’s kind of a musty, doggy, rankness that permeates you and gets in your clothes. This is especially true for kids and pets. They can run around outside for a few minutes and come in stinkin up the place.

Well, a dog's body collects odors. Yes, grass does smell bad because the dirt stinks. If your dog is a girl than you can buy some spray for dogs that deletes odors.

Oh yeah, isn't that fun? It's really great when you live in the country, now I don't let my dogs run loose, but once there was a roadkill something on the side of the road and all three went to check it out. Yuck! They also roll in dead mice that my cat leaves around occasionally (but at least that doesn't stink).
There's many theories as to why dogs roll in stinky stuff like cow pies and dead critters, such as trying to disguise their scent, but I don't think it's really been decided.
To prevent it, keep your dogs on a leash, at least till you check out the yard and pick up whatever nasty stuff is laying around. Fun fun!

It could be coming from the soil where they potty, as waste keeps getting absorbed into the soil. Even though I clean up after my pet there is still a very strong unpleasant scent that is always present after coming in from outside. I have a small basin with antibacterial soap and water that my pet passes through before coming back to avoid bringing in bacteria, ecoli, etc, indoors.

Dogs love to find some foul smelling stuff and roll around in it. That is probably what happens. Do you have farm animals, horses, cows, etc? They will roll in their poo and yes it smells awful.

Instant dog smell as soon as they go outside is caused by their Pheromones.
If your dog is excitable, nervous or has fears, it can be much worse, especially in larger dogs.

They may be rolling in poo. Go outside a few times with them to see what they are doing.
They are rolling in something.
