There is so much wisdom in his many books and writings that it is hard to distill it down to a simple answer. To me, perhaps his greatest legacies are:
1. his work towards interfaith dialog
2. his ability, through his writings, to bring a wide audience of readers into the monastic life--to help readers see that contemplation, spirituality, worship can all combine with daily work--that we are capable of encountering the holy in our ordinary lives and we can even seek it out.

All his life in the monastery, Merton had been dogged by stories that he had abandoned his vocation or run off with some woman.
