Could you get 20 people to agree on what is esthetically pleasing "art"?
Yet we still use the term and we still enjoy art.

Well unfortunately the term Christian or Christ like is now a blanket term which has expanded to include a whole lot of different faiths and beliefs. Catholicism is nothing like Baptist, Methodist, Mormons, etc. When I say I am a Christian I mean I follow the teachings of Christ as written in the Bible. I do not, however, belong to any organized group. I have found that Christ's churches have become eerily like the harlot of revelations. Working evil deeds, giving false witness., corrupting the scripture to ease their conscience of blame for their sins. It is indeed a sad expose on what should have been so much more beautiful and unblemished is made entirely unclean and defiled.

I believe the term Christian actually means "Christ-like", and admittedly some of them are far from fitting that description. Technically, any follower of the teachings of Christ is a Christian, though there is a wide variety of interpretations of those self same teachings, hence the great variety of religious denominations called and calling themselves Christians. But this need not be too astonishing to non-Christians, as similiar divisions and schisms have occurred in all the other great religions as well. So no need to make too much or too big a deal of the various sects and divisions within Christianity.

Interesting way you put that there, "how in the hell." Of course, in hell, no one will know what a Christian is because there won't be any there.
Wordplay aside, read the book of James in the Bible for a good working definition of what a Christian really is. The book of John is also good reading for that. Don't take any human's word for it, go look it up for yourself. Truth is never determined by an opinion poll, after all.

This is an honest question, and one, as a Christian, I respect.
Please understand, a lot of "Christians" devote themselves to the teachings of man, in place of Jesus - like Catholics, LDS, Seventh Day Adventists, etc.
There is no confusion when one is a fundamental Christian and has a persona relationship with Jesus Christ. There may be disagreements - which even occured in the NT, but Jesus is the author of truth, not confusion.

when someone calls themselves a Christian i just take them at their word. it's not up to nonChristians to define Christianity. It's up to the Christians to project their image. if they allow the likes of Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and Pat Robertson to speak for them without protest or rebuttal then that's the image of Christianity they must want the world to see and believe. i don't know if American Christians really want Christianity to become a Taliban-like power but as a whole they are aren't protesting very loudly the impression that the Christian talking heads and the Fundy Evangelicals are imposing.

the vast majority of disagreements in Christianity are minor
but you're right, its a disgrace how supposed Christians fight amoungst each other.
Jesus said beware of wolves in sheeps clothing, and I believe that most if not all the fighting is started by them.
But remember that man's way is show me and I'll believe and God's way is believe me and I'll show you
thats why the "rabid" anti Christians you encounter are so amazed that Christians can believe what we do.
1 Corinthians 1:18
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
you must first seek God
Matthew 6:33
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
and don't think you can figure out the Truth without asking God
Hebrews 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
and your natural (carnal) mind won't understand
Romans 8:6
For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.
you want the Truth?
John 16:13
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
trust Jesus, and see what happens

It's all about faith and the way you are taught. If you really want to look at how religion is formed go check out what the ancient Egyptians called the book of the dead.
