I second the person who said Rev. Billy Graham. A truly inspiring man.

My first thought was of Bill Gates, any person who would give the kind of time and money to such great causes deserves respect.

I also have to say that one of my best friends is working her way up the list. She recently (along with 3 friends) raised about 30,000 dollars to privately fund a mission trip to help out an orphanage in war torn Uganda for the summer.

It is amazing to me the answers so far. They are so incorrect - Bill Gates doesn't bring politics into what he does? How naive. Ellen Degeneres is all about politics - listen to her show. And is it not politics to be a lesbian and having a talk show? Everyone of the names we know listed so far are 'political'. You don't get to be a powerful person in the USA without politics being played and made.

I am a living American, and I'm not too bad of a person... and I don't bring politics into anything. Don't I count?

If you are looking for a serious answer, I would say that the Rev. Billy Graham would be someone in that category. He has been friends with almost every president and has still remained aloof from politics. Not many "preachers" can say that.

His was the first name that came to mind when I thought of your excellent question.

maybe poets or writers: Hemingway,Einstein-even though he is not from here-and scientists. those are the people that took the politics out of their work in most cases.
