I have given thousands of injections and have never aspirated blood. If you do you have to get a new needle and reinject in another area. Since you are injection into muscle you shouldn't have a problem. Get some oranges and practice injecting and aspirating. An orange has the same resistance as skin. I went through hundreds of oranges during my practice phase. Now I can give a pretty painless shot. I have even had kids say "wow" after I give them a shot. If you want to know the secret E-mail me cause I don't share my secrets with just anyone but would be happy to tell you. When faced with a live target don't act nervous be quick to dart the needle in and practice that nurse face that tells everyone you know exactly what you are doing.......You'll do great!!!! First of all, good luck finding an IM shot to check off in clinicals. You don't see them as much as you used to because most meds are given IV now. As for IM, aspirate. If you draw blood, and you hit a blood vessel, remove the needle and get a fresh syringe and fresh medication. Once a needle has entered the skin, it is considered contaminated and should not be used again, even on the same person. Good luck.

Stop. Take the needle out. You are in a vien, not the muscle. Do not inject or just wiggle the needle or you will give the med directly into the venous system which could have seriuos cosequences as the dose is up to 10 times higher for IM versus IV administration. IE Morphine IM dose is 5-10, IV dose is1-2. On the up side after practicing for 16 years I've only done that twice. No big deal- just pull the needle out, discard it or waste the narcotic and start over. It hardly ever happens! And bravo for you- we need good nurses! Good luck in school!

If you draw blood, move the needle forward or back a little and aspirate again. You want to be in a place where you are not aspirating blood and then you can give the IM injection.

DO NOT, as Mr Moo suggests, try to replace the blood!

Just move the needle (forward or back) so you are not aspirating blood (and therefore not in a vein or artery) and then give the injection.

Following this, you may wish to apply a cotton ball or a small amount of gauze and apply PRESSURE to minimise the formation of a bruise.

[EDIT]
Well - there ya go. I got it wrong. The MANUAL says to stop and withdraw the needle. Prepare another dose in another needle. Do not inject the bloody solution.

I am a nurse for 12 yrs. If you are having increased anxiety about giving shots...practice on an orange! If you get blood return when giving an IM injection, draw back on your syring to get out of the vein and then give the injection..no need to restick. It will get easier very time you give one...so dont give up! Best wishes on a promising career!

You just slip it in a little deeper. No problem and don't worry it will hurt him worse than you. It is a good idea to do a z track to keep them from bleeding in case you do. Pull the skin slightly and then aspirate for blood then give the shot as you pull out release the skin and the meds and any blood will not escape back out the hole of the needle track. Also good if the meds are irritating to the skin.

If you draw blood you have to start over again, as long as you follow what you have learned you shouldn't have a problem. It's nothing to be nervous about, you can do it it's the easiest of all the shots.

Get me out of right here" Stick it by to the top... my final semester, 2 human beings nonetheless flunked out, one because of the fact of grades, the different for unfavorable medical overall performance. i did not think of absolutely everyone failed interior the final semester of senior year. and prefer a prior poster suggested, it takes a collectively as to get comfortable and sense such as you surely discovered some thing in those long 4 years. At my first activity, I felt like I knew not something, and continually had to look issues as much as envision, or call pharmacy to envision me, or ask yet another nurse some thing that regarded so banal. i became into instructed this. "It takes 6 months to sense such as you are able to shop your head above water, and a year to start to sense comfortable." It became into SO genuine. all of us circulate by it, so by no potential sense embarrassed approximately asking or double checking. I discovered lots that way, and you will discover that generally, even pro Rn's make errors or do not understand. it rather is rather precious as quickly as you get into it. all of us cry in specific circumstances because of the fact it rather is overwhelming, even nonetheless it makes you extra effective interior the top. I even have now been a nurse for 9 years and that i like it, yet i will continually undergo in recommendations the problems alongside my journey, and that i bypass them directly to new grads, like your self! solid success on your final year!
