The chances are the flash will be out of sync with the camera, this will be obvious when you preview the photos, half the frame will be dark. To get rid of this you would have to use shutter priority and this could cause camera shake, which would mean using a Tripod or Mono pod.
I had this problem and ended up having to get a Cobra dedicated flash (£80)

alot of the older non-digtal flashes can damage digtal cameras, (the digtal dedcated flashes have a specal circut built in to provent power serges from being sent into the camera) If you can afford the price of a new camera go ahead and experment.
