No one is asking you to change your culture just as it was back when so many Europeans immigrated to the US.
And our "culture" is comprised and influenced by many different cultures that have come to the US over centuries.
Finally, it's not our culture that is why people immigrate, it's the policies and philosophies of our governement that encourages and makes it possible for people of any socio-economic background succeed.
You said it yourself - we will respect their freedom and religion and race. That's all anybody from anywhere who immigrates the to US wants. And I live in California - have my whole life and not once has anyone forced me to change my culture.
I certainly appreciate a great Salsa and Merenge club, a margarita and flautas!

significantly better mexicans communicate English than individuals communicate Spanish. in case you do not opt for to benefit yet another language, then do not. And better than ten million human beings is extremely some Spanish speaking persons there. and that is only counting mexicans, and no each and each of the folk from different Spanish speaking international places that stay contained in the US.

If you were to study the various assimilations of foreigners to the U.S. dating from the early 19th century on, you'd see a pattern: people from the old country have a hard time assimilating because they come here when they're middle aged or elderly and have a hard time culturally assimilating. They hang onto their culture, from its customs to language to cultural practices. They also tend to locate to neighborhoods within their culture. But their children and grandchildren are different; they start assimilating, rejecting the old ways and embracing the new. I teach high school English in a heavily immigrant part of Northern California and that's the pattern I see. I also see that although some of the parents who are recent immigrants still only speak Spanish, but they want their children to speak English and do well in school and life as American citizens.
However, your question does have some validity because the Mexicans lost what they consider to be theirs in the Mexican American War. (In 1848, the U.S. government prevailed, paid them a relatively measly amount for the states they had control over, and within the year, gold was discovered in California and the rush was on.) There are also more Mexicans in California and other Western states who do not make the annual migration back to Mexico anymore after they've earned money for their families back home because it is too difficult. In the 1980s and 1990s, the migraton occured annually; now it's mostly stopped, and I imagine the 700 mile wall that the government just approved for construction will make that trip even more difficult, if not impossible.

Because its all they know, its comforting to them in a strange country to try to make things like they were back in Mexico. They are at times afraid to try or experience new things, and because there are so many of them in the US now they don't have to quickly assimilate as immigrants from a time past had to do.They had to learn English to get a job,no special provisions were made for those immigrants as they are with the ones today. No other immigrant in history has come into another country and tried to make their language become the one spoken in that new country. Its a ridiculous premise to even consider. To really achieve the American dream they must learn our primary language.Corporate America and big money bossiness speak English and if you wish to get ahead you must speak English in America.I speak Spanish, and Cajun French, but when I'm talking to my financial adviser we speak in the language of money and that's English.

I thank you for saying that! You are right. They behave as if we are invading their country when in fact, it's the other way around! Sickening! This is America, not Amexico.
Good post. I gave you the thumbs up!

Why should we not welcome their culture? Yes I agree that they need to learn English but we should not tell them that they should abandon their culture. That is what the Europeans did to the Native Americans here...they tried to destroy them by squashing their culture, language and traditions...what would be so wrong in learning to appreciate someone else's culture?

They should respect your laws and you that's it....Their language ties into their religion and race. Stop being ignorant, and lose the superiority complex.

If you're going to split hairs, we were here first. Try imagining an invader coming into your home and forbidding you to speak your own language. Or kick you off your land in the name of Manifest Destiny. Neither of us should force each other's cultures down each other's throats. We should learn to coexist with each other's faults.

Why are people like you so closed-minded? Why not welcome all cultures? This is the melting pot after all! It is not our culture they are after, it is out jobs, our govt. I hope all Latinos boycott the English language just to piss you off!

If they want to wave their flag proudly, They can do that, In Mexico.
If they're so proud of their country, Why leave it and come to America?- shows the point to me, That they don't like their own country, So don't come here and wave your stinkin' flag in my face.
