when i read the bible on the issue of drinking alcohol the bible says it is not a sin to drink (see 1 timothy 3:8) it says the elders are not to drink too much or get drunk, and the orginal greek word is onios not grape juice too, why is it that most christians dont drink when the bible says its ok to drink?
i can understand that maybe christians decide not to drink because maybe they want to avoid certain things to become more holier in God, then why not avoid sex then, or eating fast food, or drinking coffee or sugar? it seem to me that you guys are treated to preach an agenda, or try to teach a personal religion to me, the bible mostly teaches about Jesus and what he did on the cross, and Grace as well, i dont how churches like to interpret things and force other people to follow it because thats their opinion, but it seem to me that churches like to force their views on other by fear and not by Love or grace.

All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. (1 Corinthians 6:12)

I think its because the Bible says not to be drunk with wine, where In is excess, so just to be sure they don`t get drunk even from a little bit, they drink none at all, then you have some that will teach it is wrong to drink any. I do know Christians that fast, and give up soda, and coffee, and other thing, to Be closer to God, but not because they thought it was a sin, it was to sacrafice something to God I guess, I smoke, and some think thats a sin, but I know its not.

The Bible doesn't condemn drinking, only drunkeness, and in many societies Christians do drink. (European, areas where water is not always safe, etc) However there are many warnings against the evils and dangers of drinking in the Bible and so many Christians and denominations have opted not to drink simply to avoid the chance of falling into sin. That approach is quite acceptable in the Bible. Experientially the church has learned the hard way that when Christians do drink, drunkeness often follows.

I think that you are right. Other christians sometimes look at me if I have a beer. Sometimes I actually feel guilty if another believer looks at me funny. However, as stated earlier, it isn't a command not to drink. It is commanded that you don't get drunk. I mean, what was Jesus' first miracle? He turned water into wine where they had drank so much wine that they ran out and needed more. I wonder how many people got drunk off of that wine.
I do try to be more cautious around non believers, though. Only because I don't want to be encouraging in a negative way. They see me having one beer and next thing you know, "hey christian dude is drinking. That's so cool. Let's get wasted."

Yer right ! The Bible doesn't teach Abstinence, it does condemn Drunkenness. That's why we don't drink. No one has ever been able to Imbibe for any period of time without eventually getting Intoxicated, and we avoid that occasion by Abstaining !
Some also Abstain from the other things you mentioned, but they are not thing's that are harmful to the body, an strong drink is. Therefore they are more a matter of choice, rather than necessity.

the elders and deacons are to be an example.
most members do not drink because its so easy to become drunk , so they do not want to chance it. Bible also says not to drink in excess...it says that about many things. Bible does not say to avoid fast food, sex, coffee or sugar?? I do not know who told you this, are you of the mormon faith? Read the bible and study for YOURSELF. you will know the truth this way.

Good question.....someone asked me once when I quit drinking....was it a moral decision???? I quickly answered no....that I had children now and drinking couldn't be part of the equation. With so much responsibility for innocent lives, why even take a chance on alcochol controlling me. There is just too much addiction in society..(I'm sure I would have been addicted).

The church that I go to follows the Bible. We don't make up rules on own own. Wine is good as long as you use it according to the laws where you live. The places that make up rules for the sake of rules are cults and yes there are a lot of them.

It's easy to overdo it.
You can drink a lot of wine and not think you have drunk too much but when you try to get up and walk. Hoo Doggie! Who's moving the walls?
