I am traveling to Hawaii this month, and I believe we are staying in a room without a view. Do hotels commonly give upgrades to guests? We are staying at the Outrigger Waikiki Beach.

Well the first two answers I read would probably work.

1) Call the hotel and ask. They are people to. I sometimes do this. I just ask, "If you were me... and were staying at your hotel... what could you tell me about insider secrets about getting a nicer room, etc?" You'd be surprised how your honesty (and relating to them as another human) helps you out. Ask them about THEIR favorite room at the hotel too. Or, which room would they recommend staying away from (such as an elevator located across the hall, etc). Somes the front desk is more helpful that the reservations desk (if they are uniquely separate). The front desk people actually WORK at the hotel. Sometimes the reservations people are at another location. Just ask for the direct number of the hotel if this is the case.

2) I don't know if I'd intentionally go into a room and complain just to get an upgrade. But, I HAVE been upgraded before (to a junion suite) when I disliked the first two rooms I was shown. After the second room I asked the front desk to please help me out... I didn't want the 3rd room to be bad too. At this particular hotel they actually keep the junior suites available for things like this. For the record, the first two rooms were not in accordance with what I was told on the phone. One room had a shared balcony (not private) on a lower floor... and the 2nd room was a smoking room.

3) Call the hotel and ask what the price is to upgrade upon arrival. Sometimes you can get an upgrade upon arrival. At the hotel I oversee we sometimes give walks-ins random upgrades because it has a very marginal affect on our expenses/revenue. If the room is sitting empty it is sometimes better business to make someone happy so that they return again. However, our hotel is pretty casual about this. We don't have a normal system for it. It's all based on what mood we're in, how business is doing, who is working the front desk, if the guest is nice, etc.

Be polite and smaile at all times, even when you don't get the answer you want. Hotels give out upgrades for free all the time for guests that simply ask. Sometimes the hotels are booked is very busy locations and the room you have booked is the only room available. Spread a little Aloha and it will get you far!

this will sound silly but -- just ask! tell them in your reservation that if a "room with a view" becomes available you would enjoy that. also if you're going for a celebration - they will generally try to accommodate you. at least - we do at our hotel. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but it never hurts to ask. also check out their websites adn see if they have any type of select guest program or whatnot - they are usually free to join!

Sometimes they do if you are cute and ask sweetly. Otherwise, complain about your room once you enter it. Don't sit on the bed, don't place your suitcases on the bed .. don't touch anything in the room itself or you will get stuck with it !! .. then they will upgrade you at no extra cost. Good Luck ! :)
