what works for me is to not think about it too much. If i think about it too much, then i get incredibly nervous. Then i try something that makes me feel more calm, like for me, its reading.

Find a calming center. Create a place in your mind that you can always go to to reconnect with your deep reservoir of inner calm. For example, my center is a beautiful Japanese garden in autumn with a Buddhist temple in it. These images all feel safe and welcoming to me. Create your own mental space like this. Build it little by little until you are very familiar with it. Be able to go there for just a second or for a few minutes (when you are waiting in long lines or in a doctor's office or during a social encounter). Just remember, when ever you go there it will immediately give you a feeling of calm and it will reassure you that serenity if only a heartbeat away when ever you need it.
