depends how brittle your bones are- if you are young and spritely a crash at 17 miles an hour is unlikely to cause you much harm ;)

I learnt how to drive in a 126. Brilliant little cars! Are they unsafe? Compared to modern cars, they aren't quite as safe, but they are not inherently dangerous.
To Improve the handling, put a bag of cement in the front under the bonnet. It really helps, especially in the wet. Don't skimp on tyres, get the best you can afford. If you can afford to get the springs shorten by an inch the lower the ride height, this also makes it more sure footed. (Don't attempt to do this yourself, get a professional, if you get it wrong, you've trashed your car!)

If you still feel unsafe (which you really shouldn't) you could try a modern Fiat. I have a Cinquecento Sporting, which is like the 126 slightly younger sister, not as cute, but still fun to drive. Or hold on to next year when they release the new Fiat 500. Visit www.fiat500.com and check it out.

About as dangerous as cars get. accident wise. Rear engine, very light thin metal, Classic Mini is similar size but much stronger and the front engine takes some of the force if it is a frontal hit
Reliants are much stronger, I saw one hit by a Range Rover and the damage was minimal, light yet strong glass fibre not steel..
Apart from open top sports cars and the Fiat X19 is pretty bad, the 126 is about as bad as it gets safety wise.
