Any dog that has been surgically changed like ear cropping or tail docking, can sometimes be used to describe a "fixed" (neutered or spayed) dog.

An altered dog is the technical term used by breed societies for a dog (either sex) which has been surgically made unable to reproduce. A female is spayed, a male is neutered.
In layman's terms, the female has had her uterus and ovaries removed under anesthesia. A male has been castrated (testicles removed), generally under local anesthesia.

As another reader has noted, to "alter" can also mean ear cropping or tail docking, but usually means removing its ability to reproduce.

typically "altered" refers to having the dog fixed. Or "Sexually Altered". however I could never figure out why they called that "Fixed". I kind of think it's more like "Broken"
