In Saudi Arabia, you'll have to wear a lightweight black/grey robe(abaya) over your clothes, and a scarf is highly recommended, though some western women dont, especially while sitting in cars. You can leave your face and hands uncovered.

In Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, etc you dont need to wear the abaya, though lots of locals still do, purely out of personal preference. Just wear something not revealing and not tight. You dont need a scarf either. Jeans and Tshirts are ok.

In no country do they force you to cover up completely, those who do, do it of their own will.

Hope that was useful :-)

In Saudi Arabia it depends on the city. In Dammam and Jeddah you can leave the house with your hair uncovered but you should still wear an abaya. In the bigger malls you will probably be left alone. In Riyadh you should cover your hair. However it is a good idea to cover your hair in all cities in some of the more traditional areas like the gold souks. Also there are religious police called Mutawa that may come up to you and tell you to cover your hair if they see you. Take a scarf with you and if you see other women with their hair uncovered then you can take it off, otherwise I would keep it on at least loosely covering your hair. Remember this is their country and you are a guest so you should try not to offend.

Depends on the country, for example, you would be able to wear smart clothes (no mini skirts/tank tops) in most north African countries. The mid East is different. Basically, wherever there is a serious tourist business, that country allows westerners to be dressed as they would at home, albeit, respectfully and respectably.

You have to cover up by wearing an abaya otherwise the
Islamic police will lock you up. You can only leave your hair open if you want to.
