Sometimes rebellion against God, and just hanging in there.

God sends the Dark night to purify us from our sins (many of them hidden and subconscious).

I don't think the "dark night of the soul" necessarily means that it only lasts one night. It's referring to a time in our lives that we turn and question everything that we have known, and believed, and every choice we have made in our lives. We look to see what ramifications from these have played out in our lives. We question if we have ever made a difference for anyone else much less ourselves. You lose all of your hopes, dreams, passions, compassion, fears, etc...I think it's that you experience a true state of apathy. (you become numb)
Having a strong belief system in place before you hit this spot in your life is possibly the best thing anyone could have going for them at that point. Even though you seem to have let go of your beliefs weather it be in a God or Higher Power or a Spiritual Path, it has formed a layer of support for you that will give you the strenght you so desperately need when you feel that the weight of all of your life is bearing down on you and smothering the very life out of you.
If you are experiencing this is don't give up, and allow yourself to just be, and know that as all things "this to shall pass".
