**Cheers**!!!

I completely agree! Pigeons get such a bad rap! I get the same crap because I love rats and I get a lot of the same shmuch pigeon lovers get, too. I love pigeons. I think they are under rated because they're so common. I'd love to raise some of the rarer varieties, but I'm already wrapped up with my parrots. Plus you need to have a permit to have pigeons in my city. They're considered live stock here. Downtown you can see that many of the wild pigeons have bred with the domestic colors as you'll be on the bus and you'll see some beautiful pied and spotted birds. I love watching them fly by my home. The birds like to conglomerate beside the train tracks and when a car drives by they'll rise in a huge swirl of wings. I don't understand why that isn't considered beautiful.

It's sad that people forget that WW1 was heavily influenced by carrier pigeons. Many mens' lives were saved by pigeons even though many died. One bird managed to save a platoon last minute. Her leg with the message had been shot off but the remains were hanging by a single piece of skin. She managed to survive and she was considered a hero by many. I know I do. If that's not bravery, I don't know what is!

Pigeons and Doves are the same species. They use white pigeons at some weddings (passing them off as doves) to release when the bride and groom step outside the church. They fly to their 'home' where they will be waiting for the next wedding.
I had pigeons as pets as a child. The rats lived under their coop. Not a part of the domestic winged wonder living inside. Rats can be great pets too! So there is no need to be offended. Those who wish to become educated on these matters will certainly look less foolish when comparing pigeons to rats.

I completely agree with you but this is where I think that phrase came from:
Rats are scavengers and will eat almost anything in order to survive. Pigeons are scavengers just like rats are, as you obviously know because you most likely know more about these beautiful birds then most people. Also many people hate rats and hate pigeons, not me, so that is also another possibility to where the phrase came from.

Wow, memories! When I was a child growing up in Brooklyn NY, my dad had a pigeon coop on our roof. He had many types such as Homers (these birds are brought far away and released and always find their way home. There are Flights and Tiplets etc.
The Tiplet is an amazing bird which does acrobatics in mid flight.
We had hundreds of birds and used to travel to trade (for breeding purposes) them with other Pigeon owners. I remember standing on the roof when another owners bird gets lost and flew near my dads coop he would send his birds up and try to capture the other birds. Train them by constant feeding them and breeding them. It was a very competitive thing back in the day. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Facts:

Histoplasmosis is a disease caused by a fungus, which grows in pigeon droppings. It also grows in soils and is found throughout the world. When cleaning droppings a person may breathe in some of the fungus, which in cases of high exposure can cause infection.

Psittacosis (also known as ornithosis or parrot fever) is a rare infectious disease that mainly affects parrots and parrot-like birds such as cockatiels, and parakeets, but may also affect other birds, such as pigeons. When bird droppings dry and become airborne people may inhale them and get sick.

Amen.

My daughter raises pigeons. We are also tired of the same perceptions about bats.
