It's the caffeine in it.
Caffeine makes you feel more awake and stimulated so that alone could help
As for Gatorade, It helps becuase it makes you hydrated (Its a sports drink after all) and the reason you're hung over is becuase you are dehydrated from the alcohol.
PS Drink water before you go to bed and it usually helps for me! =)

My guess: the sugar jump starts your metabolism, helping you recover from the night before. It puts something in your stomach that isn't likely to come back up or fill up your stomach easily, but provides a big boost of energy for you body.

because pepsi syrup was originaly used as a medicine for stomach aches, as was soda water, and one day somebody had the bright idea to mix the two to try and fix realy bad stomach pains and found it tasted realy good. cream soda was invented the same way.

The caffeine dilates the blood vessels (which have been restricted). Also, it's liquid, which you really need if you have a hangover.
Try water... it's the best thing

I believe it is because the caffeine boosts your mood and sugar increases your blood sugar - also boosting your mood - - - both of these effects are short-lived, however.
