Mine may have been related to my low blood sugar condition (hypoglycemia).
I think it is because when we succeed at a short term goal - such as an athletic endeavor, then we get excited about our success. When one has low blood sugar - getting excited leads to increased blood sugar - then increased insulin production which lowers blood sugar too much - then feeling bad, because of the insufficiency of blood sugar. Over time we may associate achieving with feeling bad, thus something to fear and avoid.
Also, in our society, people sometimes get really put down by others for being "better". I think it is due to the mistaken thought that "blowing out someone else's candle, will make your own candle look brighter". It doesn't work. If someone's "candle" is putting out 50% of its possible light - "blowing out" the other candles in the area will just make the entire area dimmer - not increase the output of the "candle".
However, if your "candle" keeps getting "blown out", it can make you not want to even try to "light" it in the first place.

A fear of success/ of being successful will get you no where. you start with you . if you have no faith, no confidence that you can be successful then you will never be.

Succeed? Really though, it depends on the situation. If this fear is truly affecting your life, then you should seek counseling.
