Cause by typing in something mindless or even typing in a full-stop without any actual words, they earn 2 points.
In a way, thanking you for the 2 points is ettiquette - they're acknowledging that by doing what they've done they've helped themselves but that if you hadn't asked a question they wouldn't have been able to access their 2 point potential from you - so your question enables them.
How do you feel about the two points? Do you feel that it should be your right to allocate any points to answerers of your question? Do you feel like you're getting cheated by others who take advantage of the fact that you've enabled the 2 points for those who abuse the system?
Thank you for asking the question you did - and no, I'm not fishing for my 2 points (I know that'll happen anyway) and certainly not trying to get the 'best answer'.
Cheers, Meg

Void answers are a form of gaming. Users are responding to the incentives in the system.
A better approach would be to calculate the average value of answers rather than the total number answered and assign a grade rather than a level. How about 16% or more best answers A, 12-16% B, 8-12% C, 4-8% D, <4% F. Perhaps a grade of D or higher could be required to ask a question. There could be some improvement in the selection of best answers. While subjective ranking is OK for questions about opinion, the 'best answer' for questions of fact do not always correspond with a correct answer. Changes are unlikely because the Yahoo business plan is about generating volume of traffic to be sold to advertisers. The unwashed and uneducated respondents that can't come up with credible answers have money to spend too, and perhaps this is what the advertisers are (or will be) paying for.

Usually it is given as an answer by those who do not know the answer and are more interested in getting points than in helping people seeking solutions to their problem. There really is no way to control those idiots!!

Because the questions are usually lame and you can say almost anything regarding to a question for the 2 points. Nobody steals points from you.

They're thumbing their nose at the questioner.
If you pay careful attention to the questions that get this reaction, there's a good chance that you'd probably consider those who say it have rendered a public service by passively attacking a troll and site nuisance.
Isn't that comment better than something as flatfooted and crude as "you dummy" or "oh shut up"??

If you give me the best answer, I'll get 10pts. and that would make me 10 points closer to the next level.

Usually because the question is too moronic to be answered any other way.
Questions that are mean spirited, bigoted, ignorant, or just plain bizarre get that answer.
