It's having a hard time attracting flies, so I feed it cooked meat once in a while. I'm not killing it, am I?

Yes. You most certainly are killing it. Venus flytraps are bug eaters, and not very efficent ones at that (at least not the ones in captivity...) Try to feed them insects only, and even then only once in a while. They are quite capable of sustaining themselves on photosynthesis alone for quite some time.

if you had any salt in the 'cooked salmon' your flytrap will NOT like it.
I assume here that the thing still moves (and no, they do not snap closed quickly except under ideal conditions). Flytraps do not need the protein snack to do well. I recommend fertilizing at every watering with what is known as 'Alaska Fish Fertilizer' but make sure for a low intensity feeder like the flytrap series of plants, you must mix the final fertilizer down to one-tenth ( yes ONE-TENTH) of the normal application strength. Do not place this plant in direct 'window' sunlight - it'll cook. Do not leave it standing in a saucer of fert solution. 5 hr of indirect sunlight, or being under a 40 watt flourescent for 8 hours will do nicely for light as we move into the winter of 2006.

Cooked meat is ok, but a tiny bit of raw hamburger is a better food for a Venus flytrap in my experience.

Get meal worms from a pet store. They're cheap and you don't have to run around the house with a fly swatter.
