I inherited a used computer that had a primary partition with WinME installed, plus an extended dos partition. I want just one large partition with WinXP Pro installed. I have tried using FDISK to remove the extended dos partition with no luck. Other than buying Partition Magic (or similar), is there anyway to get my hard drive back to just one big partition?

Thanks for your answer. I bookmarked that site for future reference. However, I am familiar with the "normal" FDISK and formatting process. But for some reason, this computer will not allow me to delete the extended DOS partition. It says I cannot do it because I have a primary partition. When I try to delete the primary partition, it says I cannot do it because I have an extended DOS partition. Sounds like Catch 22 to me. I am not familiar with "partition" problems since I never use more than one partition on my drives. I just want one big partition so I can store as much as possible as easily as possible. And nothing I do seems to get rid of that extra partition.

I would try to run the XP Pro installation disk. In its setup, it will ask you questions about its partitioning. If I remember rightly, one of those options is to combine all the partitioned space.

you do not desire dos to place in homestead windows me. you will desire to ghost your device with norton ghost earlier attempting to make any transformations on your partitions... one incorrect pass and you will lose all your archives...
