Okay My friend told me this and I don't believe him. He told me if you are undercover as an officer and if someone asks you are you a police officer you can't say no. You can say "are you crazy" or "get out of here" but you cannot outright lie and say no. Is this true?

No this is not true. I do not know where this rumor ever started, but I love it. The bad guys believe this rumor and makes our job easier.

Try turning the tables. If you are a drug dealer and I as a cop asked you if you were a drug dealer, would you lie about it or tell the truth?

Police can lie to you. How many times have you seen the old trick were they separate two subjects and tell one that the other is pointing the finger at them.

Here is a question to all responding to the first question. Can anyone tell me where this rumor started?

As the other officer has said, no it is not true and is just an old rumor. When I have worked undercover, I have lied about my job.

Of course, I work in Texas and these laws may differ in other states. I am not sure, but I did hear a rumor that Oregon was caught in a problem similar to this recently. There is not a law on it, but one of the canons for their lawyers was that a lawyer cannot work with a case knowing a person in it is lying. This caused some problems for the police when the D.A. would refuse cases from undercover officers, but it was quickly resolved by their Supreme Court.

Here is a link to all of the current Texas statutes. You will find lying mentioned in some laws, like perjury or making a false report to the police, but you will not find a law saying the police cannot lie. As a hint, the Code of Criminal Proceudre is the law governing how cases are handled and what the police can do.

yes that is true you can not say that you are to but you can do everything to make them think you are not. watch cops when they are going after prostitutes and the chick asks the officers says "do i look like a cop", "do you really think i am a cop" stuff like that

Nope, you can't tell any one if u are an under cover cop...not even another cop, and if u go to court, as an under cover cop, you can't even state your name when asked...it's considered purgery, but ur friend is i think right, you can't directly say no.
