Here is the dialogue:
"He is receiving a great gift...sort of like a present...he is receiving a gift from our Heavenly Father and it is the gift of the Holy Ghost and that can help protect us and help us to make good decisions....All his sins and all the mistakes he has made are being washed away and he is being made clean again...sort of like when we wash you in the bathtub!
Hope that helps...

"The Church that man goes to thinks that is a good way to show that they believe in God. When the man gets dipped under the water, it is kind of like taking a bath. Only where your bath makes you clean on the outside, the church believes that this special way of dipping underwater makes him clean on the inside. Not his belly, but the part of you that feels bad when you do something you know is not nice." Then would be a good time to add " I believe...." And tell her. It can be simple like "that isn't needed, just try to do what you know is good. You don't need to get dipped." Or whatever you do believe.

You have to explain that the person was doing that because of what the person believes. Determine what stage you child is at and how much information that child can take. You don't want to burden them with gloom and doom and you're going to die if you don't do something. That isn't then a reaction out of love of God it is a reaction to fear of death. Personal relationships is the key.

Are you Christian? What I mean is, do you attend church on a regular basis? Kids can understand a lot more than you think. Try telling her that a baptism is the way that God washes us. In the sacrament of Holy Baptism, we are buried with Christ and are raised again with Christ.
When God washes us, we belong to His family, and that means that we will be with him for eternity if we are baptized and believe.

I really like Ponderpin's answer........ except I would substitute "spirit" for "ghost" because if the child takes everything literally, she might be frightened by the word ghost
Otherwise, I think it's a wonderful answer

I don't know if there's much point in trying to explain the intricacies of any sort of religious ritual to a kid that young.

No, he is not going to die.
Don't worry or be afraid.
Something wonderful is happening for this person.
Baptism connects this person to God.

LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING REAL FUNNY!
A guy was getting baptized.
The minister dunked him in the water and pulled him out.
And yelled, "Do you believe?"
And he said, "I Believe!"
And the minister dunked him in the water for a couple minutes and pulled him out yelling, "Do you believe?"
And the man said, "I believe!"
So the minster dunked him in the water for a couple more
minutes and pulled the man out and yelled.
"What do you believe?"
And the man cried, "I believe you trying to drown me!"
