It doesn't sound like something that you can just,(snap out) of. If this devastating situation was in the past, you may have Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and will need professional help with that.

If the (devastating situation) is something that you are presently in, you may need professional help to deal with it, or get out of it.

If the "devastating situation" is something that you are afraid might happen in the future, you may need professional help to either make plans so that what you fear doesn't happen, or, get a more realistic attitude about what you fear.

You don't give enough information to really know what your problem is but as you say that it is sometimes hard to function, it is clear that the the thing you need to do is to seek professional help for your problem.

Is it something that you actually saw or heard or something you are imagining? If it's something you actually saw or something then if you can't deal with it maybe you seek some help to deal with it. If it's the latter then you may be having some anxiety problems and the same goes with that Good Luck

sit and meditate for a while- keep the situation in your mind- go through every possible question involving the event and answer it for yourself- before long you will tire of it and will be able to move on.

Talk to a counselor or someone that you trust. Talking about a tramatic think can help you cope with it, even if you never really 'get over it'.

After my first CPR-style call, I had nightmares about it for about a week.

I got so despirate, I called out to God, and asked Him to stop.

Since then, I have watched six other people die, without any other nightmares.

(I'm a firefigher/EMT)

face it head on. it sounds like you are running from something that is bad. you need to take the bull by his horn so to speak. if it is something between you and your spouse then sit them down and tell them. you can not run forever and it is eating you up so you know you have to take care of it.
