Most people just put them in boiling water to cook them.
I prefer to do it a different way. First turn the lobster around on it's back, then run a stick up the 'backend' of the lobster and push it up as far as you can. Then hold the lobster with the head up and let it drains over the sink. You will see a stream of yellow liquid coming out of the lobster. Now, you brush the shell of the lobster under running water to clean it off before cooking it.

You can't cook it unless it is alive. But that said if you are concerned about being humane do 2 things. First put the lobstah (as we say in Maine) in the freezer for about 1/2 hour before you drop it into the pot of boiling water. Second put the lobstah in the pot on it's back (upside down) not face up.
Just so you know Maine Lobstah are all certified as being from Maine waters. Look on the claw bands for this mark. Anything else is a fake and is a lobster from away chummy.

Sorry, I read all the answers, There is no crueulty . You can afford to eat it, in the first place, so whats the use of lamenting in killing it while boiling it, Dude. Charming way if you can afford it is Put 3 botles of Portugues cheap wine in a hot pot and put the lobster while it is alive, in the pot and put the pot in your GARDEN and let it start boiling, gradually when the lobster is semi done, you take it out and put it in a already prepared pre boiled pot of water for 10 minutes. Dont over boil it you are not supposed to fully boil it. I emphasized on the Garden. I am serious.

this sounds gruesome but I'm perfectly serious.
You need a good, sharp knife and decent upper body strength. Grab the lobster by the tail and hold it still. Dont take off the rubber bands around the claws!! Place the tip of the knife about 1 1/2 inches away from the eyes(towards the tail), with the blade edge facing away from your hand holding the tail. Press the point all the way through and then bring the knife down through between the eyes.
This is the quickest and most humane way. But you CAN cook them live.

There are 2 ways either put it straight into boiling water alive. Although if you find this a bit daunting then place a really sharp knife about an inch down fron it's head. pierce right through and draw it up making a large cut. this kills the lobster instantly and is seen as a far more humane way of doing it. make sure your water i at boiling point before you do this though.

Actually, there is another way. You don't have to boil it alive. Right before you cook it, you can kill it with a knife. Put the tip of the knife right at the end of the abdomen, stab it in, and then push it down through the head. You have to do it fast, and all in one motion. Then you'll have cut the top in half, but left the tail in one piece. That's the way we did it in school. Some people think it's not as cruel as boiling it alive. That's the way julia child did it too.

Yes yes and yes... everyone says cook "alive". But here in Barbados we import Spiny Lobster from the Grenadines and tho you can get them live... most people buy the uncooked and frozen tails. Taste great!!!! Boiled then split and put on the BBQ for 4min and 4 min Mmmmmmmmm
When we go to Pike Street Market in Seattle Washington - we buy our crabs cooked & cleaned.

Throw it in the pot of boiling water. Throw it in head first, they will die instantly (combination of the temperature and it being fresh water)
There is another way that some say is more humane- if you are skilled with a chef's knife. Place the tip of the blade behind it's head, center. Then in one fluid motion you cut down and forward, essentially splitting the head of the lobster. In this case, you steam the tasty bugger.
