He should pay for going AWOL. After reading the article, I think he only came back to the USA because he was going to be deported. He's only trying to save face by saying that he wants to "face whatever punishment" the army will give him. Come on, if he was given the OK to stay in Canada, would he be willing to come back to the US? I think not. He is lucky that the army is going to just discharge him.

I wouldn't say he's a coward, but he should honor the commitment he made to the Army. At the very least, he should have kept his mouth shut instead of bashing the Army while he was AWOL in Canada. We have troops in the field, and that alone is reason enough to keep it to himself. That's what Kerry did, and you saw that many Vietnam vets never forgave him.

The rules are the rules. The man is a deserter and deserves to be treated as such. He should be court-martialed and given a Dishonorable Discharge.

Interesting ! He was deserted... was gone for two years and the Army sounds like they will not prosecute...
Ideally, I'd Court Martial the guy, give him 3 yrs in stockade... then revoke his citizenship and kick him back to Canada.
Honestly, I would give him a Bad Conduct Discharge. Makes it difficult to find honest work. It's just no longer worth the liberal whining to enforce the UCMJ

He served in Iraq, got wounded, and was awarded the Purple Heart!! That's not ENOUGH???? I say he is a hero and should be allowed to live in the U.S. without any punishment.
