I have split ends all over from flat ironing. I need a trim desperately but I don't have the money. The only pair of scissors I have are the big chunky ones for cutting paper. My hair is longish, it's about to the middle of my chest, and it has layers. What is the safest way to trim it?

Find a cheap place to give you a simple trim... dont risk doing it yourself, especially if you have layers in your hair. Go to the salon with your hair already washed. It should save you a couple dollars if they are not washing it for you.

You're going to want a different pair of scissors if you're going to try it. If you check the beauty supplies section at Wal-Mart you should be able to find some that'll work. You'll also want a mirror. More than that, well, it's a little tricky to get it straight all the way around, especially with layers. You might want to wait until you have some cash and just go some place cheap (chains like Great Clips and Supercuts usually only run around $12).

Blunt scissors are going to make split ends worse - you need the sharpest scissors you can find for cutting hair. Try http://community.livejournal.com/feyeselftrim/ for instructions on how to trim your own hair.
