It really doesn't matter what kind of degree you have...unless you're getting into forensics. I have a B.A. in Criminal Justice, and I am a probation/parole officer, but my route had more to do with an internship that I did my last year of school. In my opinion it would be best to major in business because you'll be well rounded. Half of the crap you lean with a criminology/criminal justice degree is mostly theory and what not. Once you're in the field you'll learn everything you need to know about criminal justice, you don't need to major in it to understand it.

My father is a criminal investigator for the Feds, and he majored in accounting. So, it basically comes down to experience, and what you're willing to learn...you don't need any particular degree.

Of course, it depends on the state, or even the law enforcment agency you want to work for. Texas does not require college for police officers who have a high school diploma, and requires any 12 credits of college if they have a G.E.D.

But, Texas has a program where a person can take specific core courses and get an AA degree to avoid going to the academy. They call it their Academic Alternative Program, and a link appears below. It is a word document, so you will need to have Microsoft Word to read it, but it does show the course you will need.

I normally recommend that people planning on being a police officer take courses other than criminal justice while they are in college. You can apply almost anything to law enforcement, from business management (think about fraud and embezzlement investigations) to science (think about forensics and lab testing of evidence). The academy will teach you what you need to know to be a cop, and this will give you a career to fall back on if you decide you don't like police work or get injured and cannot be a cop any longer. Always have a fallback when you work in a dnagerous field or are trying a new career you may find you don't like.

Depends on what you want to do.

Forensics: Science degree, like chemistry or biology
Cop: criminal justice or law enforcement, or none at all
Corrections: none, won't do you any good
FBI: computers, criminal justice, business, accounting
Customs: see FBI
Border patrol: see FBI
Air Marshal: must have experience as law enforcement

For the most part, most departments are going to programs that prefer college courses or degrees. However, some still don't care if you have degrees. Bottom line, if you want to be a cop, make sure you have good credit!

I have a B.S. in Criminal Justice, and couldn't get a job because my credit wasn't good enough. I couldn't get a job in forensics, because I didn't have a science degree. I couldn't advance in corrections because I wouldn't sleep with the supervisors, and I didn't know anyone high up nor was I related to anyone with a rank.

Good luck!
