No.
But a Karting is if you supervise him when he uses it.
I used to drive kartings when I was that age and even younger.
They are a lot of fun!!!

They are not dangerous if you have the right equipment for you child. The Proper Size 4 Wheeler and Protective Gear. Like Helmet, Goggles, Elbow Pads, Shoulder Pads, Knee Pads & Proper Foot Ware. Serious supervision is always required. I also have an 8 year old. She has a set speed that she is allowed to go. I am always with her while she drives/rides. You can never be to careful.

Depends how you drive them. An 8 year old could easily get distracted and loose control. If it flips over, an 8 year old would not survive.

Yet a highly responsible 8 year old with proper supervision and training could probably handle a level course with no other drivers around. There are dirt tracks in my area where they provide classes to young kids. Many are quite excellent drivers, but it takes responsibility, training and supervision. Remember that they are only 8 years old. Don't push them beyond their ability.

Many many adults have received brain injuries and died from these vehicles.

from the site below

"In 2004 alone, an estimated 136,000 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms for ATV related injuries - many life-altering. In 2003, an estimated 740 people died nationwide in ATV incidents. About 30 percent of all deaths and injuries involve children younger than 16.

CPSC's campaign includes: new television and radio public service announcements; the creation of www.ATVSafety.gov, a new Web site for riders, parents, trainers, local and state officials, and the media; use of CPSC's Neighborhood Safety Network; and partnering with organizations and officials dedicated to promoting ATV safety.

CPSC is encouraging all riders to "take knowledge to the extreme" by participating in a training course and following our core rules for safe
riding:

1) never allow a child to operate or ride on an adult size ATV,
2) always wear a helmet and protective gear, 3) never ride tandem on a one-person ATV, 4) never ride on paved roads, and 5) never ride under the influence of drugs or alcohol."

I guess if your kid was raised around one and had a Dad with enough snap to tell him/her to keep it in 2nd gear. And Dad stayed right beside him/her for about a full year, then maybe by about 11 or 12 yr. old he/she could go on a family outing but not alone. If you are farm folks and your kid HAS to work the cows or something like that, it could be possible.
Most new riders underestimate their speed and attempt turns and bumps with way to much speed. Drive to your level of experience. Not much experience; Not much speed.
Always wear protective gear and it is imperative for a young rider.
Full helmet, gloves, eye-protection, long sleeve shirt & heavy leather boots.

Four wheelers are generally dangerous. If you teach them safe driving, monitor their activity, set a low speed limit, have them wear helmets, and only let them ride on flat land, then they should be alright.
When I was 8, my parents would always ride with me and make sure everything was alright.
Good luck!

Dangerous - kids (and adults) have died on those things. Don't you think there are enough ways for you children to have accidents as it is? Why add another one? Not only that, but if your child lets someone else's kid ride it and they get hurt, you would be liable. There's a danger to you too.

Well Dear...Mr Mills and I have got a big 4 by 4 and I am sure that an 8 year old would be too small to drive it.

absolutely not but if you must get one make sure its not to powerful and make sure it has either a pull cord or some kind of safety device that you could also be in control of stopping and starting it.....and also helmet, helmet, helmet...if all of the no answers haven't convinced you just visit your local ems, fire dept, or PD and ask them how safe it would be (dont get me wrong im not totally against it with all the new ride-on toys for kids im even tempted to buy one for a 7 year old so dont think your a bad parent just for wondering)
