You will require a Germanium Crystal Diode, A coil of wire, A set of headphones and an Aerial.

Put them together and listen to the Radio without using your own power. If you want a diagram write to me and I will send you one.

A crystal set is the only self powered method.
To get decent reception of distant stations you need a long aerial ,otherwise signal strength will be too feeble. Also there is only sufficient power to run high impedance headphones.
Lack of tuning selectivity between adjacent stations also a problem with so many transmitters on air. Some crystal sets are quite complex to minimise the above problems.Intercontinental Short wave transmissions can be received with shorter aerial.

I made one when I was a kid.
All you need are:
Capacitor
Inductor
Diode - be carefull to choose one that that works at very low voltage
Sensitive headphones
Long wire
Patience!
You can only hear AM signals using this kind of setup and I recommend a variable capacitor to allow tuning. Go for a few MHz and there are loads of strong signals that you should be able to detect.
I am not going to go into details here but do a little research to do the sums to get the correct frequency band and it should work.
I spent ages winding loads of inductors until I made one that worked.

The crystal radios mentioned above are on the right track. Very weak signal, but audible with headphones/earphones.

Build a crystal set. You will need a diode, a set of high impedance headphones and a long-wire antenna. It will only work on local AM stations.
