I would say NO. My daughter won't get to play video games until she is 5... and even then, it will be video games made for 5 year olds. I read in a magazine that letting children under 5 play video games, be on the computer, etc causes them to have eye problems anyway. I think too many parents also try to use video games as baby sitters...

Most kids want to do whatever they see you doing. It's not that they have any real desire to do it. If you have a second controller, there is no harm in allowing your 2 year old to play with it while you're playing a game (even if it's unplugged). If he doesn't tire of it within a few minutes, you just say it's my turn now and you should do other things. You'll find this will usually satisfy the kid.
If your kid later develops an interest in video games, there is still nothing wrong with allowing him to play them, as long as you regulate the time he plays and the type of games he plays. Educational games are always fun and some are more fun than others! Learning to use a mouse or controller builds coordination skills too.

i dont think there are any reliable research data that says that video games can truely have a negative effect on a child.
but what i can say is that video games do give more stimulation to the brain than say watching television, or reading a book. the kid wont get past lvl 1 but its still brain stimulation and thats really the whole point. it doesn't really matter if its drawing pictures or building blocks or playing kitchen.
however, my 2 year old and 1 year old would get quite bored playing video games, because they just can't grasp the concepts, just too complicated. although oddly enough, they can play with the door stopper thingy that is like a coiled up spring, for HOURS on end when its bed time.

Yes yes yes yes. Video games do teach many skills, one being reading since alot of the time you must read (though it won't really matter for a two year old.)
What's up with all the hating on video games? I've been playing them since I was eight and I'm now 16 and weigh 105 pounds. NOT OBESE! I am also an honor roll student. My parents bought me my first video games and always told me they were helping my vocabulary. (I love RPGs with lots of reading, it's like a book you can play.)
To everyone who said children can get obese, strained eye, and obsessed: BOOKS WILL DO THAT TO YOU TOO! I read the latest Harry Potter book in one day and boy did my eyes hurt.

My neighbours did this and now their son is a youngster. they have not got any discipline. he's 14 and having ex along with his lady pal and all they did became into purchase him a container of condoms. At age 8 he might run around the backyard with an actually sword, swinging it around. At 3 he became into enjoying violent video games too. surprisingly sufficient he became a great candy and extremely respectful youngster yet it is coz his grandparents are VERY strict and thank God they stay on an identical street. i think of he might've became out vastly diverse had it not been for his elders. the situation with our society, fantastically in Canada, is which you would be unable to remark on absolutely everyone's parenting even whilst it rather is down good risky and/or stupid and this has have been given to end! i might hand them a pamphlet on the psychological outcomes of violence in early formative years. Will they be mad? sure. would desire to you care in the event that they are? No. i will relish having the youngster as a student of mine in some years. I instruct in an determination college for psychiatrically disturbed toddlers.

I think that a limited time of video games is good for hand and eye coordination.I have allowed mine to play them,I do only allow the educational ones, they have some like spongebob with numbers, sesame street letters and such like that.I think it helps them prepare for preschool and give them the headstart to the knowledge theyre expected to learn in this day and time.

They make learning games! But my brothers have been playing for as long as I could remember and they are addicted now and that is their lives. I think kids should be limited time to tv and video games...

Our daughter is 2 months away from 3; she recently learned to use the computer mouse and plays age-appropriate things on the computer.

NO! I don't think kids should play video games at any age! They need to be outside playing with other kids!

If he is playing something age appropriate...sure a few minutes here and there will help develop his fine motor skills.
