I've been using Linux for a couple of years now for fun and work and thought I'd give you my input on it. First, like some of the other's posted you shouldn't be getting Linux in a zip file. Look for a .ISO file download. An ISO is basically a CD or DVD that has been condensed down into 1 file for the purpose of recording(burning) a disc that is an exact duplicate of the original master copy. Most likely the Linux ISO file you download will be small enough to fit on a 700mb CD-R. To burn an ISO file I'd recommend using Nero, the demo will work fine if you dont have the full version. Just load up nero smartstart, choose the backup icon and then click 'burn image to disc', after that all you need to do is tell nero where to find the iso you downloaded and pop in a blank CD-R. If your just starting to explore the Linux operating system I'd reommend downloading a distro called Kanotix. It's great for beginners and experts alike and has exceptional free technical support on IRC (server: irc.freenode.com channel: #kanotix) You can find the website with information and ISO downloads at http://www.kanotix.net The current version is 2005-04 but that is a little dated so I recommend downloading the latest version from here:
http://debian.tu-bs.de/project/kanotix/preview/KANOTIX-2006-01-RC3.iso

A quick summary of Kanotix would be that it is a Debian sid based linux distro that uses xorg and runs KDE by default. The reason why I think it would be good for you is that once you burn the ISO onto a CD-R you can just pop it into your cdrom and reboot(you may need to go into your BIOS and change the boot order to first check the CDROM for bootable discs before booting from the hard drive) Once the cdrom is loaded it will actually allow you to boot the Linux operating system directly from the cdrom! This is great because it will allow you to play with and try out Linux without having to commit to a hard drive installation right away. It may be a little slow this way because it needs to keep reading from the cdrom whenever you load a program but it is definetly very usable, you'll also have the option to temporarily load kanotix into your RAM for an even faster experience (youll need at least 1gb of ram to do this though) If you decide you want to install linux permanently to your hard drive you can do this easily by booting the cd like I said above clicking the K menu button, going to the kanotix folder and choosing 'hard drive install' once you do this you'll get a very simple graphical interface installation setup (much like installing WindowsXP) with no hard questions or any other things to worry about. It also installs a boot loader called GRUB for you so that if you choose to do so you can have Windows and Linux both installed on your machine and choose which one to use at bootup. I hope this helps you, be patient and give yourself time to learn a new operating system. You will get stuck from time to time trying to do various things but you'll start picking it up faster and faster the more you use it. Again, If you choose to try Kanotix I highly recommend going to the chatroom and talking with all the other kanotix users there(of which theres a lot!) they will happily answer any questions you have about anything your having trouble with. If you havent used irc before you'll need an IRC client to get started. On Windows I recommend using mIRC which is at this page http://www.mirc.com . Theres also info on there to help you learn to connect to irc.freenode.com and get into #kanotix. If you want to get on the chatroom after you boot into Kanotix from your cdrom or your hard drive you'll find an icon waiting on your desktop called #kanotix that will take you right there. Good luck to you, I hope my answer will prove to be of some help to you

You probably downloaded zipped up source files to compile your own kernel, or just garbage...look for an ISO file of the Linux OS if you want ot make a bootable CD.

Linux is not distributed in .zip format. That might be someone's joke of a virus, though!

You want http://pclinuxos.com that is an ISO you burn directly to CDrom. PCLinuxOS LiveCDrom contains 1900 free games, programs, applications... runs in the CDrom, boots in RAM disc.

When you are up and running, and click on the "Install" icon, it opens access to 5421 games, programs, etc. Put it on a 6 Gb partition. Or, even, a 6 to 80 Gb drive on IDE2...

Contains frostwire, also... Contact your nearest Linux User Group for their next Installfest, as most members will hand out a FREE liveCDrom!

Any reason you didn't want to tell use what version - why did you say "a version" No version (certainly no popular version) is distributed in zip files - they come in ISO images. You want linux, go download a proper image - take your pick via http://www.distrowatch.org

once you position in a Linux device from a pucker DVD installation disc it's going to make section for itself instantly away, regularly only over 0.5 thepersistent section. once you boot you'll now be utilizing GRUB boot loader which will grant your Linux OS as default plus the OS XP as living house living house windows. Now in case you ascertain later to delete living house living house windows this can no longer get rid of Grub, so in theory you want to delete the living house living house windows OS resize thepersistent and although boot on your Linux yet Grub loader will although make a connection with living house living house windows yet for confident, if you're attempting as suited to it, will crash. it really is a lot harder to get rid of the Linux OS and the Grub loader It of course will be done yet you'll want a acceptable XP installation disc.
