Why do so many people have such a difficult time tipping others who do them a service? example: waitresses, bellmen, taxi drivers, food delivery people, beautitions, the man or woman who helps load groceries in your car..ect. Are people stingy, or do you think they are ignorant to the fact you are supposed to tip? Do people realize these workers earn most of their wages from these tips??

Most people just do not think that these people should be tipped, as they have limited exposure and experience with that

I think that most people just don't realize what service workers are paid (a little more than $2 an hour for a waiter, usually). Or, they either just don't care or don't believe that they should have to assume the burden of providing wages for a service person. Or, they're just flat out *******. I waited tables for over 3 years, and I have to get really, really bad service to tip less than 25-30%, and even then it's usually not less than 10%.

I always tip people and you would be surprised at the response you get from them. They are very grateful because this actually helps to make up their wages. Sometimes you are the first to tip them and you made their day and you feel good that you have compassion for another person and you gave from your heart. I believe some people are very mean and selfish and hates to give for some reason. They pretend to be ignorant and never think of others but themselves. I never regard any job as being degrading. Every man is here on earth to do a job , whether a plumber, carpenter, waitress, manager etc....a job is a job.

I will tip a waitress or waiter, but that's about it. The pizza guy gets min wage, and the pizza shop charges a delivery fee on top of that. Do you tip min wage fast food people?

I don't go anywhere that uses bellhops, and I put my own groceries in my car, that I use in place of a taxi, but when I have had to use a taxi in the past, I didn't tip. They charge about $3 just to get in!

It's either ignorance or being cheap. I always look at it like, if I can't afford to tip for a service, I am not going to ask for it.
I wait tables and definitely depend on tips because most restaurants pay servers less than minimum wage. I have found that when I do get "stiffed" it is often from foreigners. I was once told that in some foreign countries people who are working at a service type job are paid well enough that they don't have to depend on tips. So I think some foreigners don't tip here in the U.S. because they are ignorant to the fact about people depending upon them.

A lot of people don't realize that waitresses, etc., make most of their income from tips, and many don't realize what the standard amount is. Also, a lot of older people are unaware of inflation and don't realize that fifty cents doesn't go as far nowadays. However, and I'm speaking from experience, there are certain standards of service that are expected (getting refills, not having to wait for the check for half an hour, etc.) and when those aren't met, it frequently gets deducted from the tip.

It isn't people who are stingy, but employers, They would be happy if they didn't have to pay ANY wages, and their 'employees' relied entirely on tips. But I disagree. People should be paid a wage for their work, and they should know what their paycheck will be, not have to count out a jarful of change each night to find out how much they made.
You should either tip everyone who does something for you, or no one. For example, why not tip your surgeon when he takes out your appendix? Or the mechanic who overhauls your car? Why not tip the teacher who looks after your kids from 9 till 3 every day? Or the lifeguard who watches those kids at the swimming pool?
No one would object to paying a little more for menu items in a cafe, if that extra went towards a decent and dependable wage for the employees. But tipping is degrading to servers. It puts them in the position of asking for a handout, because that's exactly what a tip is.

perhaps a lot of these people are not doing a good enough job to deserve a tip. i base tips on the quality of service. if i dine out and the waitress never comes back to the table after bring the meal until it's time to bring the bill then i don't tip. they should be back to ask how the food is and to offer drink refils etc.... i leave a tip if they deserve it. forget the 15% thing... 15% of bad service is zero tip.

To the people who say that members of the service industry should go to school and make something of themselves--

Who are you to judge another person's life choices and decision making. Not everyone has the opportunity to go to college; and many members of the service industry are putting themselves through college with money from their jobs. These people are making your life easier, and it is therefore not optional to tip them. If you don't want to tip, stay home for dinner, cut your own hair, put your own groceries in your car, and drive yourself around all the time....

oh, and most people who don't tip are just stingy--they all try to give excuses but it all stems from the fact that they don't want to spend any more money.

you should tip servers 20% for good service, 20%+ for great service. Bad service is on its own. But 15% is a joke for great service......people are so cheap

I think it is a little of both. Some people may think of tipping for only certain services. Others may just not be able to spend the extra few bucks to tip. Mostly people are just ignorant and take everything for granted. Most people are just not gratefully for the things that people in service do for us.
