Because it's worked for them for the thousand years since they forbade marriage of priests? After all, the purpose of the ban was to prevent priests bequeathing property to heirs which otherwise would go to the church, not to prevent them from having sex. The pope that enacted the ban had mistresses. I suspect he would be shocked to know his utterly economic decision has resulted in 1000 years of pederasty.

I tend to agree with one of your other answers. The Catholic Church is the worlds wealthiest religion in terms of property and land owned. It also generates much of this wealth from the poorest people of the world, giving very little in return. Is it right that if a girl is made pregnant by rape that she should be made to conceive? NO! Is celibacy a natural state? NO! Are victims of child abuse to be paid hush money? Well, according to the Church the answer is obviously Yes. Not just picking on Catholics, all organised religion has major flaws. You don't have to be religious to be a decent human being and some of the most loathsome examples of mankind regularly attend so what does that tell you?

That's a pretty broad generalization. The Roman Catholic Church isn't the only religious group having problems with abuse; it's just the most openly publicized one. The past few examples of pedophilia scandals in my area either occurred not in churches at all, but within secular sports groups. At any rate, clerical abuse is a great moral evil, and does need to be addressed, regardless of where it happens. One cannot say that, in every case, the Church puts its own interests above the safety of children, because there are many parishes that are, in fact, very concerned with this issue. I'm not a Catholic, but am married to one, and know that many churches are currently going out of their way to get rid of abusers and are openly advising people who have suffered abuse of any sort to come forward.

I'm sure I will take some ribbing for this, but since you asked. I think the Catholic church, just like most organized religions is a BUSINESS..........They may serve some needs of the spirit, but they are there to make money. The excessiveness of the Pontiff and the Vatican is sickening. I once heard a television evangelist say, "I don't ask for peopIe to send money in to me for one reason. If God wants me to minister as a televangelist, he will continue to provide funding for me, without me having to beg for it." In short, the Church is mostly self serving and therefore, doesn't have an issue with not protecting the children of the church. Let me clear one more thing, I know that there are good people out there who sacrifice their lives for the church, but I also believe that by doing this, they are getting something in return----it gives them a rush to help people---there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

do you put your own interests before the safety of others' safety? i would certainly hope so, unless you're God...and believe me, you're not Him. yeah, i was baptized a catholic, but am currently non-practicing. the catholic church has its priorities a little out of line for my thinking, but you certainly cannot condemn an entire religion based on the evil of the few who were sick enough to have made their sins public. just like i won't label you an idiot because you misspelled the seventh word in your question...if you'd have paid attention in class during those spelling and grammar lessons, you'd know that in the context used in your question, it should be "its" and not "it's"; it's is a contraction = it is. its is the possessive form of the word. sorry. look it up. it won't show up on spell check because spell check doesn't check grammar and context. blessed be.

The Catholic Church doesn't put its needs before the safety of children. There are bad ministers in every religion. Unfortunately, Catholic priests are the ones focused on by the media.

Yes the present Pope Benedict when he was then Cardinal Ratzinger in 2001 was responsible for a directive sent out to every Catholic Bishop in the world that any abuse reports must be covered up and that any abuse victims must be silenced by the threat of excommunication, presently the Vatican is harbouring at least 7 pederast priests who are repeat abusers and whom the US want to extradite but whom the Vatican is protecting. The Vatican and that means the Pope continues to thwart the efforts of the civil authorities to investigate abuse reports and refuses to cooperate with them. There is no concern shown for victims of abuse by pederast priests and all policy is directed at containing scandal and protecting only the reputation of the church.

No denial, I know that there were some bad priests, but honey, get a life! Not every priest is molesting a child out there, not every priest is bad. In all my years, I've met more nice priests then bad ones. After all, there are child molestors in schools, in librarys, in parks, everywhere. Are you suggesting that the Catholic church is responisible for every person in the world? What about the teachers that molest kids, or the story I just heard on teh news about the guy who went to Targets to molest girls? Is the Catholic church responsible for that? NO! Why not get over it! I'm sick of people accusing my church of being nothing but a bunch of perverted old men when there are people like that everywhere, in every religion! Just a few nights ago, I was watching a documentary on pedifiles. Guess what! One was a rabbi, but are you bashing Judaism?

Money probably. The church is only damaging its reputation by protecting these evil people. If the Church was to co-operate 100% with the authorities then surly the Churches reputation would be significantly improved.

**EDIT**

Why is this question getting a thumbs down? Is this not a problem that needs addressing?

Because the Catholic Church is not a Christian church.
