I am caught in a loop with Windows XP. My computer powers up, does the memory test and then takes me to an option screen where I can choose if I want to start in Safe, safe with commad prompt, safe with networking, load last successful settings or start windows normally. No matter what I do, I get the windows logo for about 10 seconds then the computer re-starts. Any suggestions? Every once and a while, I get into the setup and it says that the speed of my processor is off... any direction is appreciated.

You got a Dos diskette or a CD you can boot off of other than the hard drive? Something that doesn't load a bunch of stuff in the process?

Try these:
Check the motherboard manual for the jumper to reset the bios settings to factory default and do it.

It might have gotten scrambled.

Lacking the jumper or manual, removing the battery and leaving it unplugged for 24 hours will usually reset it.

If it still says speed too high and you have more that one memory chip, try removing one - then the other.
Then, swap slots and try again.

It seems like it's running until it tries to use more memory (by loading some version of windows).

What happens if you don't do anything at the option screen? Typing F8 or any unrecognized option should stop the countdown to where tries to load something.

See how long it will run that way...

If you have a built-in graphics adapter, lower it's memory usage.

You may have to repair windows from the installation CD. This is not the recovery function, but a trick that might work.

Ask again later with for more info depending on what you find out.

The only time I've had these symptoms (minus the cpu clock speed being off) is a problem with the windows installation, sometimes can be solved with recovery console running chkdsk, sometimes a reinstall of the O/S is necessary.

UNFORTUNATELY it sounds like your boot sector on your hard drive is damaged .... you are going to have a problem getting back onto XP. You are unfortunately going to have to reload XP and LOOSE all of your info on your computer. If your computer came wit a "Restore" disk you could try and "Restore" ... it may solve the problem OTHERWISE you are going to have to load a fresh copy of XP on your computer and live with loosing everything that you had on your comp. If you are DESPERATE to save your info there are tools that may help

That sounds like a fatal error. You probably need to reinstall Windows. Call the PC manufacturer. They will offer specialized assistance.
