If we as Americans are going to be forced to for example learn Spanish because of the growing Hispanic population in the U.S. shouldn't Hispanics be forced to learn English?

Bullcrap. Language had nothing to do with that case, and the pictured lawyer is obviously reaching because he knows he's going to lose.

Something happened that was left out. I'm guessing something like the hispanic guy was unco-operative with the cop and was starting to assault the officer. The cop then would have no choice but to use force to subdue him. The hispanic guy could've been high off his mind off coke and not feel any pain so maybe that's why it seemed a little excessive. Whatever it is, all the facts are not being presented in that article and I would bet big money that the cop, and the city is going to win that little dispute.

That is ridiculous.

As for the person who says Hispanics are becoming the majority, there was a headline today that Blacks, Hispanics and Asians combined currently make up 1/3 of the US, with white-non-Hispanic (there's that 'race' again!) making up the other 2/3s.

Actually the person that said that is actually right. It is estimated that Texas...the biggest of the countinous 48 states ...by 2040 will be about 80% hispanic..they are becoming the majority!

As a cop when you live/work in a culturally diverse area it would make sense to have at least a small knowledge of the other language in use-how hard is it to learn the following words : police, get down, stop, put your hands up?
I am not saying it is the cops fault but really it goes both ways. if you live here you have to at least have a small knowledge of English and if you work as a cop in a Spanish speaking area then the same applies. how can you do your job as a cop if you refuse to learn what you need to do your job?

Your right. English should be the language here. Polices shouldn't have to learn the BASIC of any language.

That's a BS law suit. He should have known English (the Mexican) Why do I have to keep saying that we are not in Mexico? Someone needs to tell these criminals from Mexico that. The cop should not be reprimanded at all.

The officer should have used his head and realized the man could not understand him. Assaulting the person because the person couldn't understand him was stupid.

After all, would he have assaulted someone who was obviously deaf and couldn't understand him?

It isn't a matter of language, it's a matter of communication. Two people can speak two different languages and still do basic communications.

That's the biggest load Ive seen today.Hes an American police officer arresting some one in America. Why in the world should he have to know Spanish?I will bet you money that its not in his job description, for that police department, that he must speak a foreign language. That's really ridicules, why wasn't the man he arrested required to speak English ? Its funny tho that a lot of people that can speak English, suddenly forget how when they don't wish to "understand".Ive seem it a thousand times here in Arizona. There was a law suit a few years ago when a woman sued a man because, she was caught shoplifting and tried to say that she didn't understand English when he told her to stop and not to try to leave the store with her boyfriend. She said he insulted her and she told him she was going to pay for the goods in her purse.a lawyer took her case and was trying to convince the shop owner to settle out of court for $ 10,000.The shop owner refused and when they went to court the stores surveillance tape was of her and her boyfriend talking to each other in perfect English. The couple were charged with the shoplifting and the attempted fraud.so things are no always what they seem on paper.

The police officer should file a counter-suit against the person for not learning English -- I'm sure that kicking a man in the face was a traumatic experience for him.
