You will find that many of the hand-crafted items found in Australia have an 'earthy' feel. Meaning lots of browns, natural fabrics, and wares. You could probably hit your local flea market and find some rough vases (which would look as if they were made out of clay and are unfinished). Here's a site that might give you some ideas: http://www.artsandcraftsnsw.com.au/
You can head to a fabric store and also find canvas that you ould possibly decorate or leave in it's original form to use as a backdrop for items. I wish I knew exactly what you were decorating/what you are doing so I could help you further. I hope you get something out of my answer you can use. Good luck!

A cool idea would be to get some eucalyptus leaves, I think you can find some in California, may be if you have a friend there you could get them to find some and post them to you.

An empty beer can is always a good theme. perhaps Fosters or XXXX brand.

An old slightly rusty can (called a billy can in Australia) you might be able to find one somewhere.

Any bark from a tree might work as a Australiana theme.

You could make a miniture model of a water windmill and water tank ( this is a common Australian bush theme), you can see a picture of it here

Try the aboriginal art form... you can purchase some inexpensive items at Black Market Minerals, a store in Ontario Mills Mall in California. I purchased a working digeridoo from there for under $20. Google Ontario Mills and check the store directory for their phone number. You can also Google Aboriginal Art and see what is available. Ebay has some items for sale that are fairly inexpensive. If you are interested in doing it yourself, the aboriginal dot art is fun to do. You can find some meanings of various symbols at http://www.aboriginalartonline.com/culture/symbols.php and make your own art. Or try AllPosters.com and search "aboriginal art" to see what prints you can purchase.
