I have tried everything, but i keep getting bowel problems. I am a male 35 years of age 5 ft 10 180 lbs,, race white, (means nothing i dont think its heridity) at any rate i have had 4 hernia operations and i still have the same condition, whereby i get this pain on the left side of my chest lower area where the small bowel is, then it turns into full constitpation, then i get diarhea after 2 days and it goes away, only to recycle itself every 2 weeks..
ive been to a thousand doctors, and if your an amerian you know our health care really sucks... it like trying to find a good mechanic many simply want me to take laxitives and many of them have no idea what the problem is even after ct scans, enemas, everthing, i still have this damm condition....
is it IBS? if so what works? any over the counter stuff?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common medical condition in which the digestive system doesn't function normally. The main symptom of IBS is abdominal discomfort/pain. This may be accompanied by a change in bowel habit (constipation, diarrhea, or alternating between the two) and/or bloating. As many as one in five American adults has Irritable Bowel Syndrome, so if you suffer from it, there may be a certain comfort in learning that you're definitely not alone.
Signs and symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
You may have Irritable Bowel Syndrome if you have abdominal pain or discomfort that is accompanied by:
A change in bowel movement frequency
A change in bowel movement appearance
Bloating
Irritable Bowel Syndrome: three different kinds
If you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, it means your digestive system may not be working normally. This can result in a group of symptoms or a "syndrome." Along with this group of symptoms, you may have one overriding symptom that doctors use to describe the condition. You may have:
Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation (IBS-C)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome that alternates between diarrhea and constipation (IBS-A)
Stress and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
For many years, it was thought that Irritable Bowel Syndrome may have been caused by stress. Today it is believed that, while stress may be a trigger (something that can make your symptoms worse) for IBS, it may not be the cause.
Foods that can trigger Irritable Bowel Syndrome symptoms
There are certain foods that can cause or "trigger" symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. If you think you may have the condition, you may want to avoid:
Milk and dairy products
Chocolate
Alcohol
Caffeine
Soda
Fatty foods
What can you do?
Currently there is no cure for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but there are some steps you can take to make your symptoms easier to manage. One is exercising. Another is eating foods that are high in fiber. This is especially good if you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation. Fiber adds bulk to the stool and makes it easier to pass. Some foods like broccoli and carrots are high in fiber, but they can cause bloating. Some high fiber foods that don't cause bloating are apples, peaches, peas, corn and whole-grain breads and cereals.

Sounds like it could be Crones, but I am not a doctor. Have you been seeing a specialist? Try a hospital/doctor associated with a teaching university in a large town near you.
What is Crohn’s disease?
Crohn’s disease is an ongoing disorder that causes inflammation of the digestive tract, also referred to as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Crohn’s disease can affect any area of the GI tract, from the mouth to the anus, but it most commonly affects the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum. The swelling extends deep into the lining of the affected organ. The swelling can cause pain and can make the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea.
Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease, the general name for diseases that cause swelling in the intestines. Because the symptoms of Crohn’s disease are similar to other intestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis, it can be difficult to diagnose. Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers in the top layer of the lining of the large intestine. In Crohn’s disease, all layers of the intestine may be involved, and normal healthy bowel can be found between sections of diseased bowel.
Crohn’s disease affects men and women equally and seems to run in some families. About 20 percent of people with Crohn’s disease have a blood relative with some form of inflammatory bowel disease, most often a brother or sister and sometimes a parent or child. Crohn’s disease can occur in people of all age groups, but it is more often diagnosed in people between the ages of 20 and 30. People of Jewish heritage have an increased risk of developing Crohn’s disease, and African Americans are at decreased risk for developing Crohn’s disease.
Crohn’s disease may also be called ileitis or enteritis.

Could be Irritable Bowel, or possibly diverticulitis. Avoid fried foods, corn/popcorn. Try taking Novo Fibre, just make sure u drink plenty of water. I was diagnosed with irritable bowel last year, and have been on so many medications which did not seem to work for me. I am taking novo fibre right now, and am feeling much better.

It could possibly be IBS as I have the same symptoms and have had for years.
Here are a few things that have worked for me. Drink lots of water. Take fiber tablets like Fibercon, I can't stand to drink the stuff. Take magnesium in either pill or tablet form everyday, it asks like a mild laxative..
Are you under a lot of stress or anxiety? It can be a cause of IBS. I also take anti anxiety medicine.
If you get gas, take GAS-EX and keep it with you all the time.

The American doctors also are not as smart as you might think. I would do some research into alternative medicine. But, try adding fiber to your diet, in particular psyllium seed husks. I don't know what else to say.
