Do you just cease to exist? It is so hard to fathom especially when we are so connected to each other when we are alive?

YES

The people doing research on what really
happens to you when you die work in
the City and County Morgue. Those people
check your body carefully to determine the
cause of your death and file various reports
about it. Sometimes a detailed examination is
required and they use surgical procedures to
obtain the necessary information to complete
their forms. Your body is then picked up by
some representative from the hired funeral
home and prepared for burial or cremation.

There is no organ within the body called a
"soul."

This term is used to refer to the spirit of an
individual, or the essence of their being.
It is not something you can hold in your
hand or seal in a bottle. It is an "idea."
At the time of death, the brain of the
deceased person ceases to function and
process the chemical and electrical impulses
which transmit ideas within that person. So
his or her idea processing mechanism
ceases to function. Yours however is still
working fine. If you wish to remember this
passed friend or loved one, then some part
of their memory stays alive within your mind.
The strength of this memory will determine
how long you retain it.

How would u propose they research something like that? I think that is why people have faith in God or believe in mediums. We don't want to believe that we simply cease to exist. How do we know that we have a soul that's looking for somewhere to go? U just have to believe that something is waiting for us after death. I have found what I choose to believe, and if I were to die today, I am comfortable in the belief that something better is waiting.

It all depends on what you call research. Theologins continually try to prove their points based on faith, which is about as much good as a bucket full of spit scientifically. People who study the paranormal often employ double blind experiments in their search for answers. Mechanistic scientists skirt the issue completely and talk rubbish about the paranormal researchers. It's a big mess really and I don't think anyone has any solid concrete evidence for the existence of an afterlife and yet it can't be disproved either. Your guess is as good as mine, or any researchers.
