There is no single formula for building a tower. There are formula's for determining the stresses for individual members of the tower, and the structural steel AISC guidelines for allowable stresses for various types of members under various loading conditions.

I'm not a Structural Engineer, but do design simple structures. If it gets more complicated (like a tower) I let the pro's handle it.

That's a very good question. What you need to do is run down to your local university and sign up for a undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering and after you finish that (4 to 5 years) then you need to sign up for a masters degree in Structural Engineering (2 to 3 years). Then, get yourself a structural engineering job and in 4 years you will be able to test to become a Professional Engineer. Whew, after that you will get paid very well as a tower designer.

Oh that it is so simple. There are a lot of factors and decisions that need to be made prior to and during the design phase. For example what are you using for building materials, what are the soil conditions, what are the overall dimensions of the structure, what loads will the structure need to support - people, equipment, wind, snow, etc. If your building a Petronas Tower it takes the talents, skills and knowledge of many, many engineers. There wasn't a simple formula.

You mean I wasted 4 hard years in college and missed the simplicity completely. I must be doing something wrong.
