Keep them on a leash, tied to you, all the time for a while. That way, you can watch closely for accidents and act quickly. It also keeps the messes in one location so you don't find them all over the house.
Take the dog out after naps, meals, and after they've had to "hold it" for a while.
Still on a leash, take them out to where you want them to go and say over and over "go potty" until they do. Praise like crazy and go into the house. No playing. They need to learn the difference between potty time and play time. Eventually they will go on command and you won't have to wait for them or guess when they have to go.
If you catch the dog going, yell "NO" and run them outside. Praise them like crazy even if nothing else comes out, then back inside, again no playing.

Good Luck

That is an old wives tale...you can't teach an old dog new tricks. when training a dog you need to be consistant and limit your commands to 1-2 words . Rub your dogs nose in his mess command "Bad dog"then put him outside with command "potty outside" I know this works because, I have trained strays.

Everytime you feed your dog, within 15 min. take your dog outside. It usually takes about a couple of weeks.

Trainers will tell you never to rub their nose in it!
Dogs have to go to the bathroom with-in 30 min.of eating and take them out the last thing you do before you go to bed and first thing in the am. Dont forget to praise them when they get it right. They want to please us,so if your consistant it should only take a few days. good luck.
