Yes, female birds can lay eggs without males. When your bird does this you need to be very sure that she is getting enough calcium. She can get very depleted of calcium and other vitamins and minerals that she needs and can eventually get ill and die if you don't make sure she gets replenished. Additionally, when she is laying she is at risk for a problem called egg-bind. This is where the egg is created inside her but doesn't get laid, it can kill her if it stays inside.

Now that I've scared you, here is the good news - you can go to your local bird-knowledgable pet store, I DO NOT mean PetSmart. Or talk to a local breeder and they can give you info about where to get the calcium, vitamins etc that your bird needs at this stage of her life and how to get it into her food and into her! They can also help you with the feathers issue, which may be stress or may be diet related.

Here are a couple of links!

Birds can lay eggs without a mate. They are unfertilized (cannot hatch), and it's the equivalent of human women menstruating instead of getting pregnant. Too much egg-laying can be harmful, so first off make sure she has calcium in the form of a cuttle bone (from a pet store). Second, try to discourage her egglaying, which can be done by rearranging the perches and toys in her cage, and by making sure she's covered and in darkness for 12 hours a night.

As for losing her feathers, it is possible she is feather plucking. This is one thing that birds do to show you they have a serious illness, so I suggest get her to an avian certified vet within a day. It's possible she has egg binding, which is a stuck egg that she cannot lay. If the egg breaks within her, she can die from internal bleeding. A vet can verify if this is the problem, or something else. If you can't find an avian certified vet, any bird vet is a second choice, or an "exotics" vet if you really can't travel to a better one.

Best wishes.

Female birds lay eggs with or without a male. The purpose of the male is to fertilize the egg, before it is layed, to make it become a baby. Without the male, a baby will not form.

It is normal for her to lay an egg. It will not hatch, it isn't fertilized without a male around. You can just throw it away. If she is losing feathers make sure she isn't too warm. Some birds moult (like shedding in dogs and cats) seasonally but some become depressed and pull their feathers out. Make sure she has plenty of toys to play with to keep her happy.

Yes, it is possible for some birds to lay unfertilized eggs. Laying hens do it all the time. What kind of bird is it, anyway? As for losing her feathers, that's more of an issue and you should probably look up what to do about that.

Female birds who lay eggs without mating I think just plain want to be mommies.. you need to change her diet, get her some new toys. Change something in both of your routines because it's not healthy for this to continue. Her egg laying is NOT HEALTHY for her. she needs a change of scenery, new diet, toys, different something to take her mind off it... This is nutritionally very depleting of Calcium. You should add some washed broccoli to her food dish, raw broccoli. She'll probably be scared of it at first what kind of diet is she on now? Just put some in her food dish in little pieces; later on thread some through her cage bars a couple times weekly because too much green food might cause diarrhea.

it's not unusual for a "hen" to lay eggs w/o a male being present. perhaps she mistook her image in a mirror for a male bird.. no matter, if she is caged alot... meaning she doesn't get a lot of flying time during the day, please watch her carefully, she could easily become egg-bound. you'll need to be prepared to put enough pressure on the "vent feathers" to break the egg inside her and let her pass it.

Female birds in captivity do this quite often. The eggs will not be fertile since there was no male to fertilize them. I would remove the eggs from her cage, as they will become rotten fairly quickly.
