Between 5-10% of your bill depending on the setting, eg a small cafe in the day time, around 5%, 10% in the evning at a posh place where you have had a few courses. Don't tip at all if the meal was bad or tip a 1 cent or penny to make your point. A lot of waiting staff in other countries are very proud of their service and do not wish to be seen as dishonest or taking too much from you. Shame it isn't like that at home eh?

If you give a tip to restaurant staff in general, then 10-15 per cent of the bill is about right, providing the food and service has been good.
If you are in a particularly swish establishment, such as the Ritz in London, then a word with the Maitre D'Hotel or his Deputy (this is the person who will escort you to your table), will rapidly acheive a discreet evaluation of tipping policy.
I used to get really hacked off, whilst working as a Sommellier ( Wine and bar chef) in a three star establishment, that I seldom got tipped individually for my advice. Some idiot who was hosting a business party was going to buy Sauternes for his entire assemblage, irrespective of what they were going to eat!. I discreetly advised him as to the choice of wines appropriate to the dishes that his guests were ordering, and, after much vituperation on his part, I managed to save his face, albeit having to save him costs by recommending an inferior French wine where I would have suggested a more robust South African Roodeburg.
In the end, his (German) client tipped me substantially. saying ' you have done more business to satisfy my customer than our host has. I will not be giving his company my contact. I would suggest that you and he change places, except that you, my friend, are already an excellent Sommelier, and could be a good managing Director. Our host is neither a good Managing Director, and holds no potential as a waiter of any description. I hope he can wash dishes".
So tip individually, if you think that the de rang (floor service) has done beter than the chef, etc.

What you gave sounds right to me. A little over 10%. Anything less wouldn't have been enough, in my opinion. You refer to 'everyone' hassling you, which suggests that there was a group of you, in which case I think 5 euro is the least you could have given. It also depends on the standard of the restaurant; waiters in a top class restaurant would probably expect more that those in a cheap restaurant. I agree, tipping can be a minefield.

I've lived in continental Europe and I think tipping is one of those areas where people are really unsure and are really nervous about. When it comes to tipping, I just think to myself... "It's Europe, they're getting paid a pretty fair wage per hour, so anything over that is a bonus". I *hate* waiters who expect a tip even if they give bad service. If the service is good, they get a tip. If not, they don't. I normally round up to the nearest € though, even when they're crap, just for the sake of coins rattling around!

Well when I was living in the United States we would give a 15% tip as the waiters/waitress would pay the tax on the bill and only usually got minimum wage so the tip was how they made there money, But really it is up to you want you pay there isn't really a absolute amount.

It has always been acceptable to tip between 10% and 20% although in America the rule is 10%.

In Spain they don't really expect a tip (well they didn't when I was there a while ago) but if the service was good, you tip as much as you like...or as little as you like...your discretion...are you going to see them again? If yes, then may be worth giving a healthy tip...if not, then no need to worry...depending on your conscience that is!

Generally 10% of the bill, its just been plain nice if you want to give more for the service you received, if we get really good service we tip very generously, if its bad then just the normal 10%.

The "tip" is in the paycheck! Tippers are loved by business owners, tippers allow business owners to keep wages low!
Also, why don't tippers tip the people at fast food joints? Why don't I get a tip for being a courteous truck driver? Do you tip the greeter at Wal-Mart? And my favorite, why the hell do people tip a taxi driver that charges $3.00 just to get in the car???????

In the USA you should tip 15-20%.. anything less than 15% and you're generally considered a cheap loser. 10% is generally slightly offensive.
I have no idea how it is in Spain, I haven't been since I was a child.... but I do remember that, in general, tipping in Europe is lower than in the states.
