I have already met some of the family but being with the person's family on the holidays is a big step.

When they ask you and you feel comfortable going. You will be giving up the holidays with your own family which will be hard, but you may possibly be meeting your new extended family.

I don't think there is a certain "time period/allowance"....I think the right time is when you both feel that the relationship is more than just casual dating. I met my boyfriend in October and he was home with me on Christmas---because I was in love with him I wanted to share him with my family---so always go with your guts and not what is considered "acceptable" by society.

YOU CAN GO HOME WITH THIS PERSON TO MEET THEIR FAMILY ANYTIME YOU BOTH WANT TO DO THAT WHEN YOUR DATING. YOU DON'T HAVE TO WAIT TO BECOME ENGAGED OR MARRIED. YOU NEED TO MEET THEIR FAMILY A LOT SOONER THAN THAT.

First you wait until you are invited. Then you can go as a friend until you are more serious.
