Men should remove their hats when entering any building (the only exception to this is religious headcoverings, such as a yarmulke). Never pay anyone an unannounced visit. Stand up when a woman enters the room. If the bus (or other mode of public transportation) is full, and a woman walks on, offer her your seat. Open the door for others, and this includes car doors for your passengers. Never pull up to someone's house and just honk for them to come out, but rather, go to the door and ask for them in person. Clearly identify yourself when answering the telephone. For those who have children, it is the parents' job to make those children behave like ladies and gentlemen in public. Turn cell phones off at any public function, or at the very least, turn the ringer off.

I agree with whoever said that chewing with one's mouth open is kind of rude. That's just annoying. I din't know if it's usually included in "etiquette", but it really doesn't make you look good! Ever been to the countryside? Well, next time, check how a cow chews on her food. You'll see what I mean.

And it's just annoying to see someone's jaw in constant motion.

I could go on and on, but I have to admit that some rules are a bit outdated.

NOT INTERRUPTING...people do this all the time and it drives me absolutely crazy.

Never call anyone before 9 am or after 9 pm. I never follow this one but its the polite way to do things.

You should let women order first when you go to a restaurant.

When you need to take a cell phone call say "excuse me" to whoever you are with.

If you are with someone else, never spend more than a minute on the phone.

Making sure to write thank you notes is a good one too.

Most people know this, they just tend to... forget, I suppose. CHEW WITH YOUR MOUTH CLOSED! This is a major pet peeve of mine, in fact, in high school I had three surrounding tables and my own calling me mom for half the year, because I would yell at them, and if they just chewed purposefully louder and with their mouths open, I'd smack 'em on the back of the head. ... It was then that I realized, I am my mother.
Also, men should hold the doors for women, elbows should be off the table, and no woman, no matter what she is wearing, should sit with her legs open. Cross them at the knee, at the ankle, just put the knees together, do not sit like a man with the legs everywhere. Its not right. ... Crap, now I'm my grandmother, too.

Something I see alot that I don't think American are aware of is the pointing gesture. It is very rude in most countries to point while you are talking, in any way shape or form. Staring is another one I can't stand. People who stare at you way longer than is acceptable. Most old people stare, more like gawk...its like the older we all get the more they do these things. Especially the eating with your mouth full and open. Another one that drives me crazy. Or talking while your still chewing, ugh. All of these are rude.

If someone makes a toast to honor someone in a group, the person being honored should NOT drink with the rest of the group. Very tacky.

That the salad fork when placed to the RIGHT side of your plate is actually meant to be used as a Dessert fork if and when Jello is served. Good Luck! :)

When you butter your bread, you are supposed to break of little bite-sized pieces and butter them individually. You are NOT supposed to rip your bread in half and butter each side.

It seem as if no one knows this rule, so I can't really get mad when people don't do it. But I LOVE IT when people do it correctly.
