I'm an American living in Japan and when I asked my Japanese friends about this they said it means 'all other people besides Japanese.' (*^o^*)
I'm an American, so I'm an "Amerikajin" too.(^_-)-☆
'Gaikoku' means:
#1 gaikoku ( 外国 : がいこく )
foreign country
'Jin' means:
#7 jin ( 人 : じん )
1. man
2. person
3. people

Thus~ gaikokujin-gaijin.
Foreign country person = foreigner.
Hope this helps!(*^o^*)

Gaijin is short for gaikokujin, which means "foreigner" (anyone who is not Japanese). Depending on the situation, gaijin can be used in a neutral or derogatory manner.

It is the most common general word for a foreigner. It simply denotes an outsider. One may be described more specifically, e.g. eikojin for English person.
